Filmmaker Kevin Smith who directed Clerks recently revealed that it is his opinion that if DC decides to not make anymore Superman films, it would be a big mistake. He even has a concept they should follow if DC should decide to approach the character once more.
Since Man of Steel was released in June of 2013, fans have been split on how they perceived the film. While they couldn’t decide if they liked it or not, they have decided in time that they liked Henry Cavill who played the Man of Steel. They liked him enough to be disappointed that it appears that he will not be assuming the role in the future. Of course, they also have been waiting for a sequel to Man of Steel over the years with nothing on the horizon and currently no Superman film in development.
Smith thought he would get the chance to see his version of Superman. It was Smith who wrote the script for Superman Lives, the infamous film that never was with Tim Burton set to direct and Nicholas Cage was to star in. As most fans know, that fell through but not Smith’s passion for the Man of Steel. It was during recent episode of his Youtube show Fatman Beyond, that Smith explained why he feels that not making another Superman film is a mistake.
That’s a mistake I think you need to keep your big guy vital. This is the very first superhero ever created, the ‘king of the superheroes’ if you will, the one that paved the way for everybody else. While we’re in this amazing era, this renaissance of comic book movies, don’t leave your best guy on the bench.
Although Smith never had the opportunity to bring the man of steel to the big screen, he has directed other DC heroes as he directed episodes of The CW’s The Flash and Supergirl. It is that passion about the DC heroes that he feels should be brought into any future Superman project and you should look no further than the original Richard Donner/Christopher Reeves version.
Just fucking hand it to somebody who’s going to make it what everybody knows what the character to be. The character’s a symbol of hope, man. Like, go back and watch 10 minutes of the Christopher Reeves Superman and use that as the DNA for what they do going forward. It’s not about some Christ parable, or he’s the fucking alien from another world, he’s just a good fucking dude. It’s that simple. you can make a movie about a good fucking dude.”
Smith went on to talk about how the Christopher Reeve/Donner version understood how simple the character could and should be.
The Christopher Reeves and Dick Donner version of Superman is just so beautiful and so simple, and that character is beautiful and simple, but not simple like he’s stupid, simple in that it can appeal to anybody, you know what I’m saying?
Do you think Smith is right and that perhaps DC is overthinking the character? Should they just concentrate on the man as originally conceived by Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster?
