‘Killing Eve’ Season 4: Episode 7 Review: Barn Swallows, Crossbows, and Pizza Cutters

I told you more people would die, didn’t I? Rest in peace to one of my personal favorite characters, Konstantin, who was slain this week at the hands of his trainee Pam. Very sad. Anyway, a lot of other interesting and weird stuff happened in this series penultimate episode, so let’s dive in.

Anjana Vasan as Pam, Kim Bodnia as Konstantin – Killing Eve _ Season 4, Episode 7 – Anika Molnar/BBCA

We open where we left off, with Villanelle on the island off the coast of Scotland. It’s revealed that the woman with whom she wrestled last week was indeed Gunn, the high-ranking Twelve member who Helene was on the phone with last week. It’s clear that Gunn does not want other people finding her, though, because she quickly captured an innocent looking older man who was seen boating just off the shore. Gunn drags him back to her home and fillets him, while he’s still alive, while an intrigued Villanelle looks on. Afterwards, they head out on a hunt and Villanelle asks if the crossbow Gunn wields is the same one she used to shoot her just two episodes ago. We never hear the answer. Later in the episode, they kiss and Gunn tells her to move into the cabin (instead of the barn, where she was).

Meanwhile, Eve has returned to her day job as some sort of security detail for an unspecified rich woman. Yusuf notices that she’s a bit down, so he takes her out to karaoke. While she’s there, she has flashbacks of doing the same activity with some familiar season one faces: Elena and Bill. It’s a reminder of how much her life has changed and how much she’s been through since the events of the show, and it understandably makes her more depressed. Yusuf tells her that she needs to move on and live her life, and Eve says she’s not sure she wants to. Yusuf gives up and leaves. Eve winds up talking to Martin, the psychiatrist whom Villanelle almost accidentally killed earlier this season. He tells her to spend time with the people she loves in order to find herself and enjoy life. After that scene, we cut straight back to the Scottish island, where Gunn asks who “the woman cradling [Villanelle] in Margate” was. After Villanelle says “nobody,” Gunn says rather ominously that “people can rot you too. You got to cut the rot out before it kills you.” Villanelle considers this for a frighteningly long time before we cut away.

Remember that notebook Carolyn found on Lars’ body last week? Well, she’s used it to track down some codes that she think will lead her to a meeting of leaders of various cells of The Twelve. There seem to be a lot of references to birds, particularly the barn swallow, the national bird of Austria. Carolyn finds herself at a hotel in Salzburg that seems to be a birding hotspot when she runs into Vlad, who reminds her of all the people she’s betrayed and that she is completely alone. As he’s speaking, she seems to realize that she’s at the wrong place and scribbles “Barn Swallow MI6 Pub” into the notebook.

Jodie Comer as Villanelle – Killing Eve _ Season 4, Episode 7 – Anika Molnar/BBCA

Eve apparently stole Helene’s phone off of her dead body, because she discovers a text message with an image of a barn swallow. She knocks on Konstantin’s door to find out what it is. He tells her that it’s the invitation to a meeting, and they realize that The Twelve doesn’t yet know that Helene is dead. Konstantin also gives Eve the location of the island in Scotland, thinking that they can work together and hopefully face less of a chance of dying.

Pam is enjoying a fun day off at a Margate carnival to hang out with that guy she made out with once. There, she gets a text with an assignment in Margate. We don’t really know what it is until she goes to Konstantin and tells him how great he’s been to her. Killing Eve sure does love a quirky murder weapon because she slices his neck with a pizza cutter. Unique! As he was bleeding out, Konstantin asked with resigned acceptance if the job had come from Helene. When she says yes, he sighs and tells her that she’s dead. Pam panics and tries to stop the bleeding, but it’s too late. He tells her that there’s a letter in his bag for Carolyn, and that Pam should tell her that he’s always loved her.

Villanelle tries to escape the island when she realizes that Gunn will not help her be free and is just another high-up Twelve member like all the others. Gunn chases her with a machete. We end the episode as Eve arrives on the island as this is all going down. Gunn sees her, tackles her, and turns her head to facilitate slitting her throat. The episode cuts to black just before this happens.

Jodie Comer as Villanelle, Marie Sophie Ferdane as Gunn – Killing Eve _ Season 4, Episode 7 – Sally Mais/BBCA

Without any promo trailer for next week’s series finale, it’s hard to say what will happen. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if Eve dies, but I don’t think it will be Gunn to finally take her out. I predict that Villanelle will save Eve and kill Gunn, and the pair will make it to the meeting of The Twelve. If Eve doesn’t die, I would be similarly unsurprised if Villanelle does. However the series wraps up is sure to be exciting, and I can’t wait to say a bittersweet goodbye next week.
