‘Killing Eve’ Season 4: Episode 6 Review: Life and (Two) Deaths

Villanelle’s alive! Last week’s biggest question was answered during the opening scene of this week’s Killing Eve, which saw Pam attempting first aid on a wounded Villanelle as Eve and Konstantin bicker and stand around. With Villanelle’s survival, though, came two other important deaths: Lars/Johan, the co-founder of The Twelve, and Helene.

Our leading duo shared yet another of their intimate moments as Eve played nurse while Villanelle recovered from her injury. Villanelle was still clearly upset that Eve had her arrested, which Eve said was because she wanted to see if Villanelle’s absence would make her life easier. We never got an answer as to whether it did or not. Despite Eve’s repeated efforts to help her, Villanelle ultimately told her to go away. An aimless and still recovering Villanelle is secretly passed a note from a person named Gunn, telling her that even though Helene wants her dead, they do not. With that, Villanelle tells Eve that Carolyn is in Berlin looking for Lars.

Meanwhile, last week’s episode left Carolyn in a cabin in the woods with her former lover and co-conspirator, currently under the name Lars Meier but originally called Johan back in the 1970s when The Twelve was created. Carolyn informs him of the recent efforts to torture and kill high ranking members of The Twelve, and after some arguing, they decide to make a deal: Carolyn will tell him who’s after him if Johan will tell her who ordered her son, Kenny, to be killed (remember that heartbreaker last season?). Carolyn reveals that Helene is out to get him, so Johan insists that he set up a meeting to see her and that Carolyn go in his place.

At said meeting, among other things, it’s revealed that Helene’s father was a lover of Carolyn’s father. There’s no real point to that revelation, but it’s just kind of fun to know anyway. After Carolyn shares one of her funny and completely irrelevant stories, they get down to business: why is Helene targeting Lars? She dodges the question and asks in return for the name of his superior. Given what we saw last episode, it seems interesting that he would even… have a superior? Maybe I just missed something last episode, but The Twelve just seemed to be a group of anarchists that over time evolved into the international assassin ring that it is now. The implication that someone is higher ranking than the group’s founder is indeed an interesting one.

Helene and Carolyn go their separate ways: Helene back to her home and Carolyn back to Lars. Eve finds herself at their meeting point about fifteen minutes too late, but she’s able to follow Helene. Once she’s back at her house, Helene is on the phone with the mysterious Gunn, who seemingly encourages her that they’ll do better. She hangs up and calls them an idiot. After receiving another call, she lies down in bed and the camera pans down to reveal a knife-bearing Villanelle. Just as she’s about to strike, Eve walks into the room, wanting to know where Carolyn is. When Helene seductively invites Eve to sit next to her, Villanelle decides the moment has struck and slashes her boss’ ankles. In the ensuing struggle, Eve finds herself with the knife, and after not much hesitation she tosses it right back to Villanelle, who subsequently kills Helene (rather gruesomely). Villanelle leaves and tells Eve: “I’m done with you.”

Eve is able to track down Lars’ cabin, where Carolyn reassures her that she’s not working for The Twelve and is working at this point just to see who killed her son. She urges Eve to back off and let her handle this, which Eve seemingly agrees to. Carolyn and Lars head into the house, and right as it seems they might start having a productive conversation, Eve busts in and shoots him. Carolyn looks more defeated than upset, saying that The Twelve will just replace him, “again and again, over and over and over.” She searches his body and finds a notebook, of which the contents will probably be revealed next week.

We end with Villanelle on Feasgar Island, Scotland. In the woods there, she runs into another woman. After a few scenes of nicely choreographed fighting, they’re both on the ground laughing, and Villanelle asks if she can stay there.

It’s another good week for Killing Eve, and the drama is clearly amping up before the series finale in two weeks. Knowing this show, we should be in for two more weeks of deaths, violence, sex, and witty banter.
