‘Long Shot’ Movie Review: Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron Make An Unlikely But Absolutely Charming Duo

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”21101″ img_size=”900×500″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Synopsis:

When newly unemployed journalist Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen) happens to attend a posh charity event, he stumbles across Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron), his babysitter from way back in the day. She also happens to be the secretary of state. And running for president. Amused by his scruffy charm, she takes him on as a speechwriter and they soon find themselves falling – in love, on top of each other, and down long staircases.

Let me start this review by prefacing this: before watching Long Shot, I had been very disappointed with several comedy movies that have been released in 2019 thus far. It is sad for me to admit that because comedies are one of my favorite genres to watch but ONLY IF the movie is actually decent. If I don’t buy the acting because of poor direction, I am probably not going to like the movie. If the story is ordinary and predictable, I am probably not going to like the movie. If the majority of jokes fall flat for me because of a bad script, I am probably not going to like the movie.

Long Shot was NOT one of those movies.

For starters, the chemistry between Fred and Charlotte was incredible. Watching them fall in love on the big screen felt so right, despite the fact the movie makes it very clear that they are totally different from each other and should not belong together – especially in the world of politics. In this case, however, opposites clearly attracted to one another. It gave me all the warm fuzzies to watch the underdog win the heart of a beautiful AND strong woman in power, regardless of the disapproval and even blackmailing threats that came along their journey. Yes, the plot was a bit predictable but Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron each did a phenomenal job portraying their character and breaking the mold of a traditional rom-com. I wouldn’t change it any other way.

Long Shot Movie Review

Being a romantic comedy, I have to say that Long Shot EXCELLED in the genre. The script was fantastic and it made the movie super hysterical. Seriously. I don’t think I have laughed this hard while watching a movie in so long, to the point where I never wanted the jokes to end! And it didn’t come from just Rogen, who is always known for being the comedian in any role he stars in. (Don’t get me wrong though – it wouldn’t be a Seth Rogen film if it did not have its fair share of “raunchy comedy”.) To my delight, the entire cast each had wonderful performances that contributed to the humor of the film and I couldn’t get enough of it.

Before watching Long Shot, I had no idea what to expect out of this movie. I haven’t seen a lot of Seth Rogen movies but typically, I hear they can be a hit or a miss. This movie was without a doubt a direct hit for me. Filled with a lot of charm, romance, and heart, this is the superior romantic comedy of 2019 to date and one of my top favorite movies of the year by far. Because of that reason, I will be giving Long Shot a rating of ★★★★/5.

Be sure to catch this film when it releases to theaters this Friday, May 3rd, 2019.[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5jiaHvx-kY” align=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
