Looking Back At The Oscars 2010 Best Picture Nominees

Although we enjoy the Academy Awards every year, we always walk away with a sour taste in our mouths. Today I will continue my series on the Oscar winners. I will share my thoughts on who won, who should’ve won and who should’ve been nominated.

The first race I am going to tackle is the 2010 Best Picture race.

Here were the 10 films nominated for Best Picture

  • The King Speech
  • The Social Network
  • Inception
  • 127 Hours
  • Black Swan
  • The Fighter
  • The Kids Are All Right
  • Toy Story 3
  • True Grit
  • Winter’s Bone

Who Won?

The story of King George VI, his impromptu ascension to the throne of the British Empire in 1936, and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch overcome his stammer.

The King’s Speech was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and they took home 4 Oscars including Best Picture.

Who Should Have Won?: The Social Network

The Social Network should have swept the Oscars in 2010. Jesse Eisenberg should have beaten Colin Firth for Best Actor, David Fincher should have beaten Tom Hooper for Best Director and this film should have run away with the Best Picture Oscar.

This is hands down one of the top 5 biggest travesties in the history of the Academy Awards. The Social Network is one of the greatest films of not just the 2000s but of all-time.

It’s a crying shame this film didn’t win more Oscars.

Who Should Have Been Nominated?: The Town

The Fenway Park scene is one of the best shot sequences that I have ever seen in any film. Ben Affleck had a vision for a film and what he did with Peter Craig’s script deserved to be award throughout the award season. Jeremy Renner received the films only Academy Award nomination and deservedly so. His performance was kick-ass as James Coughlin, Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck) best friend.

This film is remarkable on every single level. From the acting to the direction to the writing to the cinematography, it checks all the boxes. The Academy does seem to have a thing for not nominating Mr. Affleck (I.E. Argo).

If you have never seen this film, take the time to check it out because it is a great thrillling chess match.

Honorable Mention: Shutter Island – Seriously one of the most slept on movies of the decade.

Who would you have picked as the winner? And what film was missing from being nominated?
