While such turn of events shouldn’t come as surprise to those familiar with the genre who have seen many such characters rematerialized, it still was good for fans to see the return of Darth Maul as played by Ray Park.
Now, Lucasfilm, in advance of the eventual release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, has released the scene that started all the buzz, giving everyone the chance to see the return of Darth Maul in a Star Wars film. Check it out in the video here:
In his appearance in Solo, he no longer had the Sith distinction of “Darth” before his name, but that didn’t change the fact that he was still a powerful warrior for the Dark Side. Of course, his appearance in Solo came as a major surprise to those whose last memory of Maul was not being able to pull himself together after his confrontation with Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
Co-writer Jon Kasdan discussed with Comicbook.Com about his decision to include the fan favorite in the movie:
“So it was something that I’d been subtly laying in hopefully early on. I always sort of thought that’s … a character I adore from the prequel trilogy I felt like was underutilized in the prequel trilogy,” Kasdan said. “So it was something that, when we realized that we wanted someone in the crime world above Dryden, we wanted it to feel like there were bigger fish than even the ones we get to meet in this movie. There was no one more lethal and more in the spirit of the ultimate villain that we could identify in the trilogy than him. That’s something that I sort of always wanted, and [director] Ron [Howard] was very supportive of. Sort of intuited that it’s what I wanted, and we made it happen.”
