‘Lucifer’ Came Back Like It Never Left

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”21810″ img_size=”900×500″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]The TV show Lucifer returned for a fourth season after the network Fox cancelled it. A huge uproar was spread throughout social media; especially on Twitter with the hashtag #SaveLucifer during May 2018. It has been officially a full year, and now Lucifer fans have been granted 10 new episodes further exploring the world of Mr. Morningstar.

This season started off like it never left. The tone of the show was as consistent as the prior seasons and the humor from Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) returns as the main lead and continues to display the charming and charismatic devil that fans love. The supporting cast each held their own this seasons it was difficult to juggle so many characters and storylines, the writing staff did an excellent job giving a fluid pace throughout the show and the appropriate screen time with each character; honestly the supporting cast seems equal to the main lead instead of a simple plot device. These supporting characters sometimes felt like co-leads as the arc of Lucifer’s would take a backseat at times to flesh out the characters of others.

Dan (Nicholas Gonzalez) had the most underrated arc throughout the season. The ending of season three left a bad taste in his mouth, and I am happy to say the writers did not ignore him and actually gave his character some depth instead of being the “ex-husband” stereotype this season. Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) role was a great continuation of the character. As he starts off as an angel in the beginning of the show, trying to bring Lucifer back to hell, to then go through his own changes was great development as I worried that he would have been pushed to the side and be one-dimensional. There is one particular episode in the middle of the season where you see him truly shine as he has plenty of screen time with a minor character that has a huge impact on his psyche. I would argue that his arc was one of the smallest, but after further thought, I believe his arc fit the character as we learned new things about him. Dr. Linda Martin (Rachael Harris) had a good performance and was the same therapist that we love as she continues to give the audience insight towards Lucifer’s thought process. Her character went through a transformation early, but this lead to her character being static as the season progressed as her development showed little change. Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German) was amazing from start to finish. The writers did not miss a beat with her character; from beginning to end she brought her “A” game, and gave us a realistic take on humans.

Honestly, Ella Lopez (Aimee Garcia) had an incredible arc. Even though it was something minor, it kept Ella from being this one-dimensional character she portrayed in season 3. Her development did not involve Lucifer, but it was nice to see a change of pace in her character. Sadly, Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt) had barely any story with her. I forgive the writers because there were so many other characters to juggle that it is hard to give everyone their screen time, but I also feel that Mazikeen has finished her arc and is still the bounty hunter we love. This is not necessarily bad, but I am interested to see if they are going to keep her in this role or give her another arc, but I feel that her screen time will decline.

I was amazed at how the show felt as if it did not change networks and still had the same humor, and deep moments and reveals between characters; bringing this show back for a fourth season was a great decision by Netflix. Even though it is on a streaming service, it did not become more bloody or add more gore; naked butt shots (mostly by Lucifer) were seen but that is as far as the show goes. The soundtrack of this show is perfectly chosen as sometimes I would “Shazam” some songs to add them to my playlist, and the chemistry between Tom Ellis and Lauren German is beautiful, and when they share scenes together it uplifts the moments even more.

Season four has met my expectations and in some episodes exceeded them. If they ended Lucifer after this season, I would not be completely satisfied, but it ends in a way that can be deemed acceptable. I think all Lucifer fans can agree that this needs a season five immediately to continue the life of these characters. It feels like the show never changed hands.
