Luke Cage season one was a massive event. It essentially temporarily broke Netflix. It also made a lot of people aware of the greatness that is Mahershala Ali. Which, is why it was so frustrating that Ali’s character, Cottonmouth; was killed off halfway through season one. For me, personally; it’s where I fell off of season one a bit – as I disliked Diamondback (the villain who then replaced Cottonmouth).
Why kill off such a great villain halfway through the season? Especially one as complex as Cottonmouth. It felt like we were finally finding out more of Ali’s character when he was taken from the show. And even though the Marvel universe is dead at Netflix, we still want answers. Luckily, showrunner and creator Cheo Hodari Coker is willing to discuss Luke Cage even today.
Look below:
We only had him for 7 episodes. That's why he agreed to do the show.

Luckily, season two was cleaner and had the consistency season one didn’t have. Still, it would have been nice to see Ali’s Cottonmouth continue in the series. It would especially have been interesting to have him face off against season two’s baddie turned anti-hero Bushmaster (played by Mustafa Shakir).
What did you think of Cottonmouth’s death?
