Manifest Series Premiere Review

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”7176″ img_size=”800×450″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]On Monday, September 24th, NBC premiered its newest show, Manifest. Promos for the series were heavy on Hulu and network television, promising a series that would emulate Lost. The premise of the show is that a plane departs with a group full of passengers, hits turbulence, and when they land, the find out the plane has been missing for five and a half years. No one on the flight has aged and they felt like the moment of turbulence lasted only a few seconds. But, when family members greet them, they see that those not on the flight have aged and it is indeed five and a half years later.

SPOILERS AHEAD.

This is my complete and honest opinion. I was expecting the show to be a lot better than it was. From the previews, this show looked gritty, dramatic, and heartbreaking. The series started off with a completely unnecessary voiceover and the continuation of this was distracting, to say the least. On top of some questionable acting and a slow episode, there were a lot of major plot-holes in the show that I felt should have been considered.

We have a plane full of people who departed at some point and to the outside world, it’s been five and a half years. People have died, loved ones have moved on, and children have grown. But, for the passengers, it was only a few minutes of turbulence. They’ve stayed the same age and are completely dumbfounded by the truth they’re given. This is on top of the fact that it seems this event has connected them all somehow with voices in their heads, telling them what to do, which again; was irritating, to say the least.

The point is, if this happened in real life, there is no way the government would have just let everyone go after a few hours of vetting. Most likely, they would have never been released back to the general public and most likely would have been tested on, because this is a scientific mystery. We of course, as I said before; have some not good acting involved, such as the end scene of the episode that I will withhold from telling you. What I will tell you, is that what did happen warranted a much grander reaction than what we were given.

All in all, I don’t know if I will tune back into Manifest. I hope that the budget was not purposely low for the first episode to see how it fared, because a poorly done intro won’t entice anyone to keep watching. If you are interested in giving it a shot, you can find the first episode on Hulu and tune in on Mondays to find out where this series leads.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
