Marvel Is Responsible For Cancellation of Glover’s ‘Deadpool’

There was a time that Donald Glover had plans to make an animated Deadpool series for FX. Unfortunately, those plans were unceremoniously cancelled. In response, Glover posted a script for an unmade episode, which he appeared to write in response to the cancellation that spoofed both Marvel Television and current pop culture in pure Wade Wilson style.

FX CEO John Landgraf revealed at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour that Marvel pulled the plug on the series Donald and brother Stephen Glover were creating although he didn’t specify why. “They didn’t want to do the show that Donald and Stephen wrote,” Landgraf said. “We would have done the show but it wasn’t our decision. When Marvel decided not to do that show, we parted company with them, as did Donald and Stephen.”

In the meantime, FX and the Glovers still have a successful working partnership, with the 2nd season of Atlanta having just wrapped up. With the popularity of the show, it is likely they continue on that path into the future.

Fans were left confused after FX’s statement on the cancellation:

“Due to creative differences, FX, Donald Glover, Stephen Glover and Marvel Television have agreed to part ways on Marvel’s Deadpool animated series,” said the statement from the network. “FX will no longer be involved with the project. FX and Marvel have an ongoing relationship through our partnership on Legion, which will continue.”

While Legion has been renewed for Season 3, the future of the animated Deadpool series is still an unknown.

It was speculated that the reason the series was cancelled was Glover was too busy to work on the Deadpool show, given his many obligations to Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Lion King, Atlanta, and his music as Childish Gambino. Glover himself denied these reports on Twitter with a comment that have since been deleted:

“For the record: I wasn’t too busy to work on Deadpool” (which is when he posted the script).

While Landgraf may still be upset with Marvel Television’s decision, it allowed Glover to pursue other creative avenues. Does the present cancellation of the animated Deadpool mean the end of it’s chances of being produced? How disappointed are the Deadpool fans?
