Marvel Studios appears to be getting serious about finding the man who will lead its new generation of X-Men, and the reported shortlist for Professor Charles Xavier is considerably more unpredictable than many fans expected. According to a new exclusive from Knight Edge Media, five actors have auditioned for the role: Christopher Abbott, Bill Skarsgård, Harris Dickinson, Tom Pelphrey and Will Poulter. None of the five has been officially cast, and Marvel Studios has yet to announce who will succeed Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy as the MCU’s long-term Professor X.
The report immediately gives us a better idea of what Marvel may be looking for. Rather than chasing an older actor who could simply recreate Stewart’s stately interpretation of Xavier, the studio appears interested in someone young enough to grow alongside a new X-Men team for years. That fits with Sadie Sink’s recent comments about Marvel building around a younger generation of mutants, with her version of Jean Grey introduced before she has even become a traditional X-Man.
Marvel’s Five Reported Professor X Auditions Are All Very Different
Christopher Abbott may be one of the more intriguing names on the list. Known for performances that can shift between quiet vulnerability and considerable intensity, Abbott would immediately give Charles Xavier a different energy from previous live-action versions. He also feels like the kind of actor Marvel could use to explore some of Xavier’s morally complicated qualities rather than presenting him only as the calm, endlessly wise headmaster audiences may remember from the earlier movies.
Bill Skarsgård is arguably the most recognizable genre name in the reported group, thanks to roles including Pennywise in It and Eric Draven in The Crow. His potential involvement had already been circulating before Knight Edge’s report, with previous rumors placing both Skarsgård and Tom Pelphrey among the contenders for Xavier. However, DanielRPK has since claimed that neither actor remains in the running, meaning their auditions may ultimately have been part of an earlier stage of Marvel’s casting process.
Harris Dickinson is perhaps the biggest surprise. His work in films including The Iron Claw has established him as one of the more interesting younger actors working today, but he is not someone fans have spent years fancasting as Professor X. That may actually be exactly why Marvel considered him. If the studio wants audiences to stop comparing every new Xavier with Stewart or McAvoy, choosing someone who does not immediately resemble either interpretation could be the cleanest way forward.
Then there is Will Poulter, whose inclusion raises a completely different question because he is already part of the MCU. Poulter plays Adam Warlock following his debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, making his reported Xavier audition particularly surprising. An audition does not mean Marvel seriously intended to cast him in both roles, but his presence in the process suggests the studio may be testing a wider range of possibilities than fans assumed.
Tom Pelphrey Would Have Been Another Marvel Double-Dip
Pelphrey also has history with Marvel, although his situation is different from Poulter’s. He played Ward Meachum in Netflix’s Iron Fist, long before Marvel Studios began fully integrating characters from the Netflix era into its current continuity. Pelphrey has since earned considerable praise for work in series such as Ozark and Task, which helped turn him into one of the more popular names in recent Professor X speculation.
Reports earlier this summer even described Pelphrey as a possible frontrunner while Skarsgård and Drew Starkey were also mentioned as contenders. The new Knight Edge report changes that picture considerably. If DanielRPK’s information is correct and both Pelphrey and Skarsgård are out, Christopher Abbott, Harris Dickinson and Will Poulter are the three auditioned actors whose current status remains unclear.
Patrick Wilson Apparently Wasn’t In The Race After All
One name noticeably missing is Patrick Wilson. The Conjuring star had been repeatedly linked with Professor X in recent rumor cycles, and his age and established dramatic presence made him an easy choice for fans imagining a somewhat younger but still experienced Charles Xavier. Knight Edge now reports that Wilson was never actually considered because Marvel was looking toward younger actors.
That is an important distinction because the X-Men casting conversation has become crowded with names that range from genuine audition reports to insider claims and pure fan casting. Until Marvel makes announcements itself, those categories can easily blur together. Wilson may have seemed like a believable candidate, but according to this latest report, he was never part of the studio’s actual search.
A Younger Xavier Would Change The Entire Dynamic Of Marvel’s X-Men
Casting younger does more than give Marvel an actor who can remain in the MCU for another decade. It could fundamentally change Xavier’s relationship with the team. Patrick Stewart’s Charles often felt like the established elder statesman of mutantkind, while James McAvoy’s films showed more of the character learning how to become the leader audiences already knew he would be.
Marvel could push that idea further by building Xavier and the X-Men almost simultaneously. Sadie Sink has confirmed that she has already met with director Jake Schreier and participated in discussions surrounding the developing cast, describing the movie as the beginning of a younger generation of mutants. That suggests this may not be a story where Charles already has an enormous school filled with experienced X-Men waiting for Jean Grey to arrive.
A younger Xavier could still possess enormous telepathic power and a clear vision for mutantkind while lacking decades of certainty about how to achieve it. That creates room for mistakes, disagreements and ideological battles with characters such as Magneto without making Charles feel like the unquestioned authority from the moment he enters the MCU. It could also allow audiences to watch Xavier’s dream of coexistence evolve rather than simply being told that it has guided his life for years.
Marvel Has An Almost Impossible Casting Job
Whoever lands the role will inherit one of Marvel’s toughest assignments. Stewart played Professor X for more than two decades and became so closely associated with the character that Marvel brought him back for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and again for the current multiverse storyline. McAvoy then managed the difficult task of creating a younger Xavier who felt connected to that legacy without simply impersonating Stewart.
The next actor will have to establish a third major live-action interpretation while Marvel simultaneously rebuilds the rest of the X-Men. That means the studio cannot simply ask who looks best sitting in Xavier’s chair. The actor needs chemistry with the younger team, enough authority to believably lead them and enough dramatic range to handle the less admirable side of Charles Xavier if Marvel chooses to embrace it.
That last part could become particularly important. Comic readers know Xavier is not always the perfectly benevolent mentor the early Fox films sometimes suggested. He can be secretive, manipulative and so convinced that his vision for mutantkind is correct that he makes decisions his own students strongly oppose. Giving the MCU’s Xavier those imperfections could help Marvel create a version who feels substantially different from what audiences have already seen.
The New X-Men Team Is Coming Together Quickly
Marvel has not formally unveiled the complete roster, but the casting process is clearly moving forward. Sink is established as Jean Grey following Spider-Man: Brand New Day, while Samara Weaving has been reported as Marvel’s choice for Emma Frost. Kit Connor is also being heavily linked to Cyclops, although reporting differs on whether his deal is finalized or he is still being eyed for Scott Summers.
Sink has confirmed that she has been involved in chemistry testing and conversations with Schreier as the team comes together. She also knows when she is expected to begin work on the movie, while Knight Edge reports that production is planned for next year in the United Kingdom. Marvel has not yet announced an exact theatrical release date for the film.
So Who Is Actually Winning The Professor X Race?
Right now, there may not be a clear answer. Five actors reportedly auditioned, two of those names are now said to be out, and there is no confirmation that Marvel has narrowed the remaining candidates to Abbott, Dickinson and Poulter. There could easily be other actors auditioning who have not become public, and Marvel’s eventual choice could still be someone completely absent from the current rumor cycle.
What the report does reveal is the kind of Xavier Marvel seems interested in creating. The studio appears willing to go younger, move away from the British interpretation established by Stewart and McAvoy, and test actors who would bring dramatically different qualities to Charles Xavier. That makes the final decision considerably harder to predict — which may be exactly what Marvel wants.
For now, Christopher Abbott may be the most fascinating name left on the board, Harris Dickinson may be the biggest wildcard, and Will Poulter would unquestionably create the strangest MCU casting situation of the three. But until Kevin Feige walks onto a stage and tells us who is sitting in that famous chair, Professor X remains one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding Marvel’s mutant future.
