Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige reflects back at one of the controversies that Marvel has had over the years. We’re talking about the fact that Tilda Swinton plays the Ancient One in Doctor Strange. Not only was Swinton’s casting a gender-swap of who the ancient One was in the comics, but her casting was also whitewashing.
According to Feige, at the time; they felt they were getting away from an old stereotype when they cast Swinton:
“We thought we were being so smart and so cutting-edge…We’re not going to do the cliché of the wizened, old, wise Asian man. But it was a wake-up call to say, ‘Well, wait a minute, is there any other way to figure it out? Is there any other way to both not fall into the cliché and cast an Asian actor?’ And the answer to that, of course, is yes.”
