Ma’s Work Isn’t Over Just Yet – Director Tate Taylor Gives New Idea For Sequel

2019’s ‘Ma’ was a thriller with what could be considered a very ambitious yet, welcomed exploration of a woman caught up in the surrounding feeling of being a child again or more so, the experience of teenhood for the first time. Lead actor Octavia Spencer plays an estranged woman who openly invites hormonal teenagers into her home with the freedom to party, as long as they follow her strict rules. When taken advantage of, she goes on a trail of revenge and the intent to prove her anger, ultimately leading to a somewhat dissatisfying execution watching her supposedly burning to a crisp. Sadly, the uneven tone left me feeling no concern for the state of her being.

The Story Continues?

But apparently, her journey may not be over just yet. Of course, like every other slasher, they always find a way back.

I’m sure in this recent drought of new films, fantasizing of possible original stories, and even eventual sequels to our favorite projects, ‘Ma’ was at the top of the list for most of us. Right?

Plans For More

Today is your lucky day. In a recent discussion with Entertainment Weekly, ‘Ma’ director Tate Taylor says there may be hope for the lonesome psychopath. Referring to the story, Taylor says he purposefully ended the film in a way that is unclear whether or not Ma met her fate. And he has already started mapping out the direction her character could venture to next.

“I don’t think we thought Ma was going to have this afterlife as this cult thing, and I think it’s worth discussing [a sequel]. I know Octavia would do it, that’s why I purposely left her death ambiguous!”  Continuing, “My idea is that she’s moved to another town, and she has open houses in another city and kills people in the open house. I think she’d be a real estate agent in the Pacific Northwest, and just murder white people looking at McMansions. That’s as far as I’ve gotten!”

An Interesting Premise

Now truthfully I must admit, this premise is already so much more intriguing than the entirety of the first film itself. The two biggest things that get under Ma’s skin are privilege and lack of appreciation. If Spencer suited up, made her way into Suburbia and beyond to smear the blood of the wealthy out in the open with no regard to subtlety or keeping her identity under wraps, I can envision a bloody good time.

Octavia definitely is on board, also speaking to Entertain Weekly she said:

“There are archetypes people only want to see me as. So I had to change that for myself [and] the next young woman of color to be able to play every type of role.”

Most importantly, both the filmmaker and lead are eager to continue the journey of the character. So, if the passion is there I say, let them have some fun! I just better lock my door and hold on for dear life if Ma comes in my direction.
