Michael Caine Talks About Meeting Christopher Nolan For ‘Batman Begins’

It is no doubt that Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy is one of the greatest achievements in cinematic history. The films are not only some of the best made comic book films to date but best films ever. The Dark Knight trilogy has earned $2.5 billion at the world wide box office. One of the shining stars of that series was legendary actor, Michael Caine. Caine portrayed Alfred Pennyworth. Batman Begins was mentioned during an interview with The Hindu and during that interview Michael Caine opened up about meeting Nolan for the first time and being offered a role in Batman Begins.

Caine says Nolan actually came to his house to offer him the role in person.

“He came to the front door of my house in the country with a script, I could see him through the glass but I couldn’t recognize him. The moment he introduced himself, I knew exactly who he was because I was a great fan of his three small films.”

While not sure about taking the role, Caine assumed Nolan wanted him for the role of Alfred Pennyworth, the butler.

“I told him, ‘I am too old for Batman. Do you want me to play the butler? What would my dialogues be? Would you like another beverage or more custard?”

No second thoughts about his time as Alfred, Caine says taking the role  was “one of the greatest things I have done in my life”

Since the Dark Knight trilogy, veteran actor Jeremy Irons played Alfred in Batman v Superman and Justice League. With Batman begin rebooted, Andy Serkis will take on the mantle of Alfred in Matt Reeves The Batman. Michael Gough is still the longest running live action actor to play Alfred having played the role in four Batman movies starting with Batman in 1989.
