Actor Michael Shannon is set to play real-life senator Joseph McCarthy in an upcoming film about his life – titled ‘McCarthy’. McCarthy was a controversial Republican U.S. known best for his man-hunt of communists in America – a practice dubbed as McCarthyism in American jargon.
Václav Marhoul will direct the film, which will be presented to the American Film Market. Alongside Shannon, Emilia Clarke, Dane DeHaan, and Scoot McNairy will round out the cast. Clarke is set to play McCarthy’s wife Jean Kerr, while DeHaan will play the “ruthless” lawyer Roy Cohn, and McNairy will play McCarthy “trusted friend and colleague” Ray Kiermas. The original screenplay was written by Tom O’Connor.
McCarthy is expected to go into production in Prague and the U.S. in 2022.

Tom’s exceptional screenplay, Václav’s uncompromising vision and this remarkable ensemble gives the film the necessary foundation to properly explore this chilling and critical chapter of American history.”

Shannon is perfectly suited to inhabit the role of McCarthy and in Jean Kerr, our story’s very own Lady Macbeth, there’s a delicious role for Emilia Clarke.”
