Movie Review: ‘Booksmart’

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”21205″ img_size=”411×609″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Every decade or so, high school seniors get a movie that represents their angst, identity issues, horniness, and need to experience excitement. This is that movie. While the concepts of teen angst and horniess are nothing new; every generation has its own specifics that make their experience unique to them. The directorial debut of Olivia Wilde, ‘Booksmart’, in theaters May 24th, tells the story of two best friends the day before graduation when they realize they focused too much on acquiring perfect grades and not enough time enjoying their youth.

The duo of  Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) easily rival that of Seth and Evan from ‘Superbad’, and that’s no easy task. Not only was it refreshing to see this kind of experience from a female perspective, but it was relatable no matter your gender. Unlike classic movies in this genre such as, ‘American Pie’, ‘Booksmart’ doesn’t rely on nudity and overly raunchy humor to keep you entertained and laughing. Being executive produced by the likes of Will Ferrell and Adam Mckay, its easy to see why this movie is an instant high school movie classic. It’s nonestop fun and covers all the bases: sex, drugs, parties, and curiosity, its all there. To me, it is one of the more accurate depictions of what it’s like being 17 or 18 and about to venture into college life.

What’s a high school movie without an over the top, super memorable character that becomes pop culture legend. ‘American Pie’ had Stifler and ‘Superbad’ had McLovin, well ‘Booksmart’ has GiGi. That’s all I’ll say about that. To wrap it up, it’s just a pure fun movie that I really enjoyed. The acting was great and the writing was hilarious but don’t take my word for it check it out for yourself in theaters everywhere May 24, 2019.
