Movie Review: Chasing Molly Works As An SNL Skit More Than An Actual Film

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”23780″ img_size=”800×450″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Have you ever wondered what a movie would be like if it combined a paranormal con artist and Kurt Angle as a Drug Kingpin? Look no further than Chasing Molly. Starring Shelley Pack as the titular character. We see Molly and her partner Atticus (Jim Cashman) often rob people of their possessions rather than exorcising their demons. It’s when they accidentally steal valuable and rare drugs that Atticus is kidnapped and Molly must do whatever she can in order to get her friend back.

Minor Spoilers

Chasing Molly is in no way a high-budget film. In fact, it’s a pretty low budget that I would compare the production quality of it to a mixture of a school film and a porno. If you think about it, most of the direction of the film and the lines they gave to people were cliché, stereotypical, and common for a starter film. You need bad guys in your film? Get the stereotypical Latino gang members. Someone who is wise? An Asian guy who talks about Kung-Fu. Someone who excessively takes drugs? An African American guy. These are all things we have seen in movies and every person was at the most over-exaggerated version of themselves.

I sound like I am being very harsh about this film. It should be noted that Pack was actually hilarious as Molly. The lines they gave her were delivered perfectly because of how sarcastic, ridiculous, and out there that they were. The shenanigans that Molly gets involved in so she can save Atticus takes up a lot of the film. While some scenes ran on too long, Pack was perfect for this part.

Side note: what is Felicia Day doing in this movie? You deserve better.

Kurt Angle plays the big bad aka Mr. Black and I have to say, he wasn’t bad. I think to myself that we don’t see Angle in many movies and while I am sure that every WWE star has to do their fair share of low budget films, he could easily be used in higher-budget/quality stuff. I thought what we saw of him wasn’t that bad.

Final Thoughts

The end of the film is probably some of the trippiest stuff I’ve ever seen and was not expecting it to go in this direction. Everything worked out in the end, I guess?

I would give this movie somewhere around a 1 or a 2 out of 5. While I don’t want to be overly critical because I was invited to review this film, but Chasing Molly is probably best not being found.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
