Have you heard of the Sniper movie series? These action-packed movies date back to 1993, making it a thirty-year-old movie franchise. With recurring characters that span multiple different films, this is a pretty impressive track record. Move over Marvel, the Sniper series doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. The franchise has essentially been Direct-to-Video since the third film in 2004, but they clearly have enough of a fanbase to keep the series alive.
Sniper: G.R.I.T. – Global Response & Intelligence Team is certainly a different film than the original Sniper movie. Once bogged down by an incredibly dour mood, Sniper: G.R.I.T. has action, guns, and knives, while also having fun. It’s a vibrantly colored movie that doesn’t fall into the pits of tropes that other paramilitary movies do. You can see what’s going on, it doesn’t take itself seriously, but you’re still getting the kickassery that you want to see from a bang, bang, shoot ’em up kind of film.
Some Good Points
Something that Sniper: G.R.I.T. does very well is that it has a lot of humorous points to it, but the actors are playing it straight. Meaning, the film isn’t made like a comedy in the sense that the actors have to hit punchlines, but the scenery, costumes, and cues in the film can create this post-modernist humor. There’s blood, guns, and death, so we shouldn’t be finding anything funny, but the commitment that the movie has to not be dark and dreary is commendable. It’s no Midsommar, but the juxtaposition of what’s going on in the movie in comparison to the brightly colored scenes is the best way I can explain it.
Some Fun Characters
Of course, the actors are what really makes this film enjoyable. Chad Michael Collins has been playing Brandon Beckett since 2011′ Sniper: Reloaded and it’s cool to see him enjoying the franchise as much as he is. While Collins is a great actor and deserves this role on merit alone, we can’t help, but notice that the film certainly likes to put Collins in sleeveless shirts or no shirt at all while the other players are often covered up. We see you, Sniper: G.R.I.T.
Josh Brener and Dennis Haysbert are also great to watch in the movie and as mentioned before, they’re putting more into the film than you would expect for a Direct-to-Video movie. The franchise has some big actors in it and there is a genuine care and respect for the craft, instead of obviously cash grabs that a lot of these kinds of movies can be. Side note: the real person to watch in this film is Luna Fujimoto as Lady Death. A great character with some really awesome scenes.
Definitely A Fun Watch!
Sniper: G.R.I.T. remembers that this is a movie for people to watch and enjoy. The actors seem like they’re having fun and viewers will too. It’s not likely to win any awards, but it’s certainly a good popcorn film to sit down and watch after a long day/week. And, if you’ve seen the other Sniper films – great; but you don’t need to have seen them all to understand this film. You can watch it without needing hours worth of lore and still enjoy.
Sniper: G.R.I.T. is available on DVD and Digital in the US and UK now!
Also, check out my interview with Chad Michael Collins on not only Sniper: G.R.I.T., but also his role as Alex Keller in the video game franchise Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 1 &3.
