Movie Review: The Forces of Evil Hitch A Ride in ‘Driven’ (2019)

Synopsis: A ride share driver and her passenger form an unlikely team to defeat the forces of evil in one crazy ride.

If you are a fan of The CW’s Supernatural, then you are very familiar with Richard Speight Jr., who played Loki/Gabriel. Speight Jr. plays Roger in a new “supernatural” film called Driven, which will come to digital and DVD on June 16th. Starring Speight Jr. and Casey Dillard, this thriller takes place primarily in a car, which I feel like Supernatural fans will appreciate after the show’s episode “Baby”. Of course, one doesn’t have anything to do with another, but us Supernatural fans always find a way to connect everything back to the popular series.

The Plot

In Driven, Dillard plays a Lyft/Uber driver (called Ferry in this) that spends her night picking up some characters. None of them compare to Speight Jr. though. When Speight Jr., as Roger; steps into Emerson’s (Dillard) car, she knows she’s up for a crazy night, but she never suspected that that would include demon hunting. From that moment on, Emerson is Roger’s partner that night, whether she wants to or not.

When Driven first starts, you aren’t really sure what to expect. The air surrounding the movie is a dark one, but Emerson is a stand-up comedian when she isn’t working as a Ferry driver. So, she’s practicing her stand-up routine in between picking up passengers. Things start really rocky for Roger and Emerson and the two have some bumpy moments along the way, but in the end, they make a good team.

Rating: 3.5/5

Driven is an enjoyable supernatural thriller that may not show too much of the demons or the supernatural stuff, but the whole movie really is just the budding frenemy bond between Roger and Emerson. I found Dillard really entertaining as Emerson and Speight Jr. is always enjoyable. As someone who can find a way to mix in humor and darkness, he was a good fit for this role.

Driven comes out on DVD and digital on June 16th and is definitely worth your watch.
