Narcos’ Wagner Moura Talks About His Directorial Debut for Brazilian Film ‘Marighella’

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”28392″ img_size=”689×315″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Wagner Moura is best known as Pablo Escobar in the first two seasons of Netflix’s Narcos. Moura is a talented actor, but is making his directorial debut with Marighella. While it is slated to come out in Brazil on November 20th, Moura fears that conservatives calling for a boycott may hinder its domestic release. The calls for boycott come from the government of President Jair Bolsonaro who claims that Brazil’s 21 years of military rule was not a dictatorship.

This $4 million film (much higher than the average budget for a Brazilian film), Marighella shows Carlos Marighella before he was gunned down by the military. Marighella was descrived as a Marxist politician and sought to end Brazil’s military dictatorship that began with a coup d’état in 1964.

While this is Moura’s directorial debut, he feels that he is an “actor first and a director second”. Moura was asked if he would be up for helming another film, to which he responded:

“I’d have to be truly passionate about the subject matter. I’ll never be a director for hire.”

He did add though that he found directing easier than acting:

“I watched my actors suffer through these traumatic scenes and thought how great that it was not me there.”

Moura expressed that working with various directors of Narcos helped him prepare for the role of director for Marighella:

“To be completely honest, it was so organic; I knew exactly what I wanted to do, had so much trust in the people I had hired and had discussed it ad nauseam with them that by the time I was ready to shoot, it was so easy. I had no clue about the process but I discovered how I loved working with sound design.”

Moura’s film is two hours and 36 minutes, but he is hoping that he can fashion the used and unused footage for a mini-series on Globo TV, who is a principal investor in the film.
