Netflix has decided to not move forward on this animated movie and it’s not because of the sexual allegations against the late Michael Jackson, it’s simply because Waititi’s schedule with Akira conflicts with Bubbles. Due to Waititi’s exit, Netflix is no longer interested.
Waititi had previously explained the theme of Bubbles:
“This film is not about Michael Jackson because that’s not a story for me to tell — or a story I’d be comfortable telling. It’s about a chimpanzee’s fascinating journey through the complex jungle of human life.”
Two dozen employees, according to Collider; had already begun on Bubbles and Netflix had acquired the project in 2017 for around $20 million from a script by Isaac Adamson. The streaming service will most likely have to eat this loss, but they are working on other stop-motion animation projects such as Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which brought in Waititi’s co-director on Bubbles, Mark Gustafson.
