Netflix’s Co-CEO Says ‘Roma’ Helped ‘Parasite’ Win Best Picture Award

Did Netflix’s Roma open the door for Parasite to end up winning an Oscar? This is what co-CEO of Netflix Ted Sarandos expressed to Variety. According to Sarandos, Roma was partly the reason why Bong Joon-ho’s critically-acclaimed film was able to end up winning the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Sarandos expressed:

“I think ‘Roma’ had a lot to do with that for ‘Parasite’ this year. I think the idea that a foreign-language film had 10 Oscar nominations and won three, and the crossover awards categories for foreign-language film, I think really opened the door for ‘Parasite’ to be as successful as it was.”

Bong Joon-ho had previously worked with Netflix on Okja, which Sarandos also credits for introducing American audiences to Korean content.

Roma lost to Green Book for Best Picture in 2019. Roma did though garner awards for Best Foreign Film, Best Director, and Best Cinematography. On top of winning for Best Foreign Film, Parasite became the first non-English speaking film to win for Best Picture

What do you think? Did a movie like Roma lead the way to Parasite winning Best Picture?
