With the DC Universe Streaming Service beginning to stretch its legs, it is to be expected that even more original content will be made to draw as big an audience as they can. With that in mind, in a FandomWire exclusive, it is reported that “Warner Bros. Television has ordered a 13-episode live-action series starring iconic DC heroine, Batgirl, to add to their DC Universe streaming service.”
At this moment, not much is currently known about the series, whether that be a perspective premiere date, what possible story the first season will be based on, or how it will be connected (if at all) to the other DC Universe shows. In addition, it is not known (as most fans will want to weigh in on) who will be portraying Batman‘s female protege. The only thing that IS known is when the filming is tentatively scheduled to start.
Batgirl is set to start filming in February of 2019 with a potential 2020 release date. Because this project is in the very early stages, a showrunner has yet to be announced. One possibility might include DC television veteran, Greg Berlanti, who could have some type of role in the show’s development. This would make sense since he is currently involved with other DC Universe original shows such as Titans, Doom Patrol, and Stargirl. Another possibility might be Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg. Rosenberg left Marvel Television and was hired to develop new projects for the Warner Bros. Television division. That would put her in a position to take on that responsibility if approached. In addition, Rosenberg should fill Warner Bros. desire to have a “strong female writer who has previously developed female-based comic book TV properties,” to run the project.
