New Brightburn Trailer Shows James Gunn’s Terrifying Twist on the Superhero Genre

Imagine if Superman had come to Earth and decided not to use his powers for good but use them to seek revenge on everyone who treated him poorly growing up. That’s the vision behind Brightburn, a science-fiction horror film based on the superhero genre. The film is produced by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and written by his brother, Brian, and cousin, Mark. Helming the director’s seat is David Yarovesky (The Hive).

The plot synopsis is as follows: What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? In this horrific take on the classic superhero trope, a couple adopts a baby who came from the stars. While they attempt to raise the boy to use his powers for good, an evil begins to grow inside that he unleashes.

Brightburn stars Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, and Jackson A. Dunn and is scheduled for release in the United States on May 24, 2019 by Sony Pictures.
