New Documentary ‘MADAGASIKARA’ Tells The Struggle of Political Unrest in Madagascar

From those who have brought you The Passing, Elizabeth Blue, and Film School Africa, Global Digital Releasing has acquired the rights to Cam Cowan’s political documentary, MADAGASIKARA.

Here is the official synopsis for the film:

In 2009, fed up with increased poverty and widespread corruption, Madagascar’s citizens took to the streets in protest. After the president was forced to resign, the international community terminated most foreign assistance to this chronically impoverished island nation. Over 60% of the country’s revenues were immediately wiped out, resulting in the dramatic curtailment of education, health care, sanitation and access to food.

MADAGASIKARA is the story of three resilient women (Lin, Tina and Deborah) fighting for the survival of their families and the education of their children against the overwhelming forces of domestic political instability, international political hypocrisy and the crushing poverty caused by both.

MADAGASIKARA was directed and produced by Cam Cowan, a former attorney turned documentarian. The doc was inspired by the University of Virginia Law School students who had explored the human rights issue in Madagascar. Cam made his first trip to the country after a year of planning and research, in June 2014. The filming process took four years. Now, it will make its debut on June 26th on Amazon Prime and Docurama. Afterward, it will be released on iTunes, Google Play, Films for Action, and more.
