With Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smolet-Bell, and Rosie Perez being cast for Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn femme fatale group movie, new character info and plot details have been shared, via Revenge of the Fans.
According to ROTF, each character will be dealing with their own individual storyline before when we first meet them:
Black Canary (Smolett-Bell) is a singer who fights crime at night.
Huntress (Winstead) was a killer for Black Mask right up until discovering that he killed her family. So now she’s hunting him down.
Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) is trying to move on from The Joker (who is referenced, but not seen).
Renee Montoya, on the other hand, is on Huntress and Black Canary’s trail because of the body count they’ve amassed.
The main villain in Birds of Prey will be Black Mask, a highly anticipated villain who will be kidnapping Cassandra Cain, seeing her as the “perfect assassin”, who he will groom to take over the spot that was once held by Huntress. That doesn’t sound messed up at all. Furthermore, according to the article by ROTF, Ms. Cain will be very similar to James Mangold’s depiction of X-23 in Logan, just without abilities. Considering how popular the character Laura was in Logan, this should be interesting – who doesn’t love a little mini murder assassin? Still, Black Mask doesn’t sound like he is getting any father of the year awards and I wonder how dark this film will really be in portraying this “grooming”.
Retrieving Cain will not be the main premise of the show, as the cast will have found her before the third act in the film, which results in the villain sending out his men, which will lead to an epic fight between the Birds of Prey and his men. This will be Huntress’s chance for revenge, against the man who tormented her.
