As the Kickstarter approached, we visited with creator Nick Winn to talk about the vision behind this massive undertaking, his love and contributions to Adventure Time history, and why this collection feels like the ultimate love letter to one of the most imaginative worlds in modern comics. CREATIVE INSPIRATIONS
GVN: Thank you very much for sharing a bit of your day, Nick. Before we get into this exciting Adventure Time collection, let us start with your creative beginnings. During your career, you have worked with major studios including Disney, Lucasfilm, Cartoon Network, Titmouse, Shadow Machine, and Netflix. But what sparked your desire to write and work in animation and, by extension, comics? Also, whose work inspired that ambition?
NICK: My family mostly. Both my parents were actors and encouraged artistic interest in my brother and I at a very young age. That blossomed into 90s/2000s rock music and cartoon network which I found my love for Adventure Time from. As I grew, I started to find the artists I gravitated towards personally (some being Jaime Hernandez, Jill Thompson and Akira Toriyama). I think what made me want to work in both these fields was I had an insane amount of joy working on art more than anything else. I was bored if I wasn’t drawing or coming up with a story and now I do it for a living!
ADVENTURE TIME
GVN: Now, let’s get into Adventure Time. When you first got the chance to work on Adventure Time, did you already have a vision for your approach, and how did you manage to keep the characters and stories true to their roots while still adding fresh ideas into the mix?
NICK: The only idea I had cemented in my mind is that I wanted the comics to feel like season 1 of Adventure Time. There’s always a special energy with the first season of shows where everyone is still trying to figure out just what the show is and there’s a magic to that. I wanted to try and find the same feeling as this was my very first time writing an ongoing comic.
The Land of Ooo
GVN: As you considered your contributions to the Adventure Time saga, what do you think makes the Land of Ooo and its inhabitants so captivating to both you and its fans?
NICK: Knowing that anything could happen in that universe is what drew me back when I was in middle school watching the show. Abraham Lincoln was the King of Mars for cryin’ out loud! It was awesome! The imagination really gets to go wild and an important thing that captivated me was how pinpointed the emotions were inside of the goofiness and fun of it all.
“Part of My Life”
GVN: With your connection to the series, including writing the 2025 Adventure Time series, when were you approached to collaborate on this extensive collection, and how exciting was it to have your contribution to the mythos included?
NICK: I prayed so hard to get the job, yall. haha! I still pinch myself. Adventure Time has been a part of my life for so long and it’s phrases and language has been ingrained into my psyche since I was a kid. It’s so exciting to write for this series and working with my editor Megan Brown and her assistant Joelena Despard makes it so easy to dive into the world of OOO.
“It will always be Finn”
GVN: Looking back at your work and the contributions of many talented creators over the past 15 years, which characters or story arcs feel newly significant or resonate differently as you revisit the series for this collection?
NICK: I think it’ll always be Finn. Adventure Time came out when I was about Finn’s age and his goofiness and weird feelings about growing up really resonated with me, but I didn’t have the language to work through it. Now that I’m rounding the corner to being 30, I can allow Finn in the comics to still have those same feelings but also give language to the readers on how to deal with the negative aspects of life and identifying what they actually are. And I always find something new about Finn every time I write for him. Even if it’s masked with fart jokes haha!
Kickstarter
GVN: This extensive collection is coming to Kickstarter. With that campaign in mind, what fresh additions, behind-the-scenes elements, or archival surprises are part of this deluxe collection that fans haven’t seen before?
NICK: You’ll have to wait and see! I will say I’ve been working on a nice little project for the campaign along with a handful of artists that I think folks will be excited for. I’m hoping to see some pencils and some character sketches as I’m a HUGE sucker for behind the scenes stuff.

GVN: Thanks again, Nick. Lastly, what do you hope both new and longtime fans will take away from this extensive collection, and do you believe there will always be a place for Adventure Time in people’s lives, regardless of their age?
NICK: Adventure Time is for the people. I hope fans new and old read with all the joy in the world, and when they’re done reading, I hope they watch the show! And when they’re done watching the show, I hope they go BACK TO THE COMICS! And when they finish that I hope they read MORE ADVENTURE TIME COMICS! AND AFTER THAT, I HOPE TH—-S’cuse me.
