For the week of August 20th, we have some incredible releases making their way to our shelves. Read on to get a brief overview of what you should have on your wishlist, then be sure to dive into the full rundown in the video below.
This week we explore exciting new releases and overlooked older gems from the Warner Archive. First up we have the Blu-ray debut of two classic Scooby-Doo movies from the turn of the century with Scooby-Doo & The Witch’s Ghost and Scooby-Doo & The Alien Invasion. These films look and sound great in HD, and the release carries over all the vintage promotional features. The label is also bringing some gems from the ’80s and ’90s to Blu-Ray for the first time including the biographical corruption drama Marie: A True Story starring Sissy Spaceck, the oil-drilling period piece The Stars Fell On Henrietta starring Robert Duvall, and the Irish coming-of-age tale War of the Buttons. These films have been shamefully off the radar of most for many years, but now they are back in the spotlight and looking better than ever.
Classic film fans have a lot to celebrate as we get the long-awaited Clark Gable dramedy Idiot’s Delight newly restored in 4K with a solid collection of new and legacy special features including an alternate ending and some restored cartoons. The label has also done some amazing with Harum Scarum starring Elvis Presley by restoring it in 4K from the Original Camera Negative. This release comes with a pair of Tom & Jerry shorts that enhance the package even more. Spencer Tracy fans will be thrilled to add Northwest Passage to their collection with a stunning new 4K restoration and a fun vintage promotional piece.
There are also some exciting older releases we bring back into the spotlight. Few cinematic pairings were as rewarding as John Wayne and John Ford, and we have two of their finest on the show this week with She Wore A Yellow Ribbon and They Were Expendable. Both find Wayne grappling with his sense of identity against the backdrop of war in rewarding ways – and the presentations are top-notch. The Sidney Lumet drama Running On Empty is one of our favorite discoveries of this episode as River Phoenix, Christine Lahti, and Judd Hirsch portray a family in conflict after being on the run for years. This is a classic not to be missed!
This is only a taste of what you can discover on No Streaming Required this week, so be sure to check out the full video below.
