This week we explore exciting new releases from Kino Classics and Kino Lorber Studio Classics. First, we have an abundance of 4K UHD Blu-ray debuts, including a trio of films from late director William Friedkin. Ashley Judd leads the psychological thriller Bug alongside the great Michael Shannon. Fugitive-on-the-run fans are in luck with the 4K UHD debut of The Hunted starring Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio del Toro. Jones shows up once again alongside Samuel L. Jackson for the military courtroom action-drama Rules of Engagement. All three releases are derived from a new 4K scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative with Dolby Vision, a director commentary track, and some archival featurettes.
Kino is setting us up to celebrate Noirvember with the 4K UHD release of Rian Johnson’s twisty mystery Brick starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The new release comes from a 4K scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative approved by Johnson with Dolby Vision and two commentary tracks. The lighthearted Clint Eastwood western also gets the 4K bump with Two Mules for Sister Sara alongside co-star Shirley MacLaine. This release gets a fresh 4K scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative of the International Cut, a new commentary track, and the previously released special features.
Throwback horror fans are in for a treat with a trio of 4K UHD releases in SDR. Sickos will want to seek out the twisted French horror film Baby Blood presented with your choice of French and English audio from a 4K scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative. You are not going to get a wholesome family outing at the Circus of Horrors, presented with a 4K scan and a new commentary track. You will find the early building blocks of the slasher genre in Fright now available from a 4K scan with a new commentary track.
The vibes are right with the ’80s and ’90s titles including the stirring drama Plenty with Meryl Streep, the biographical Oscar nominee Cross Creek starring Mary Steenburgen, the Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze hockey tale Youngblood newly re-released with a new slipcover, the raunchy rafting comedy Up The Creek, the dog reincarnation tale Fluke, and many more.
