BAFTA Film nominees for 2021 are in and leading the pack is Nomadland and Rocks.
Scoring a big seven nods each are films from Sarah Gavron and Chole Zhao. One of those nods is for best director. Way to go ladies!
In the lead is Nomadland with five nominations one for the best film category. Also in the running is The Trial Of The Chicago 7, The Father, The Mauritanian, and Promising Young Woman.
Scoring six nominations are Mank, The Father, Promising Young Woman, and Minari. Cumulating five nominations each is The Dig and The Mauritanian garnered.
What’s exciting this year is we are finally seeing some diverse nominations. There was a lot of backlash last year for BAFTA for their lack of diverse nominations. After a long seven-month review, big changes have been made. Wanting to increase viewership they increased all four acting categories and the best director category to six nominees.
Membership and Voting procedures changes have been put into effect and causing very different results. For the first-ever four women have been nominated in the director category. Last year BAFTA had all-white acting nominees. Today we have 16 of 24 that are from under-represented groups.
This year we have multiple newcomers compared to previous years. First-time nominees are accounting for four of the six nominated directors. Then we have 21 of the 24 nominees in the performance categories. Lastly, Four of the five nominated films in Outstand Debut were nominated in other categories.
The Father, Promising Young Woman, Rocks, and The Dig are among the most-nominated movies. In the past, the awards were often criticized for not being British enough but this year they are coming in strong. Three of those films are in the best film category.
258 films were entered this year. This is the second highest with last year having nine fewer. Compared to last year’s online frenzy, there have been prompt positive responses to the nominations. Susanna White, Bafta-winning director and Vice-Chair of Directors UK, said: “Today’s BAFTA film nominations are really refreshing; for the first time they feel like a true meritocracy. In contrast to what we have seen in the past, this list isn’t about films that have had the most money spent on their campaigns – this is about the BAFTA membership recognizing craft and talent across the board.”
We won’t really have an idea of how voting changes affect the nominations until next year with most movies either only being able to be seen at home. Also, take into consideration a lot of U.S. movies, were held over because of COVID so that could be part of the different makeup of nominees.
Like most other awards show the BAFTA will be held virtually on Sunday, April 11. Two shows will be broadcast virtually from London’s Royal Albert Hall across that weekend. The first show, celebrating the craft of film, will be broadcast on Saturday, April 10 on BBC Two and BBC Two HD. The show on Sunday, April 11 will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC One HD. Both programs will also be broadcast in major territories around the world.

After last year’s nominations, we started the BAFTA Review process with the intention of leveling the playing field and introduced a range of measures to ensure that all entered films were seen by our members and judged on merit. We hope today you can see some of those changes reflected in the breadth and depth of those nominated and we congratulate all our nominees.”
