Opinion: Why I Fell Out of Love With Westworld

If you had asked me a few years ago what I thought of Westworld, I would say that the HBO show was one of the best and well-crafted pieces of art that modern television had to offer us. Season one easily joined the likes of Game of Thrones and other fantastic pieces of TV shows. The show was based on an older movie of the same name and with modern-day technology, expert writing, and superb acting, the show transformed what the original story could ever hope to achieve.

My Complete Lack of Interest

And as someone who looked forward to this show, it really surprised me when I had a complete lack of interest in catching up with season three. To me, season one was perfect. As I mentioned before, the writing was incredibly smart. The acting was done well and the timing of the story, how it jumped in between the past and modern-day; was done well enough to keep you on your toes – but, it was satisfying once you found out the truth. I could go back and rewatch that first season over and over again; no problem.

I Did Enjoy Season Two

I even enjoyed season two. As much as I knew some people disliked season two, I didn’t. Albeit was a little confusing at times, I liked the twist with Bernard. Evan Rachel Wood was ruthless as Dolores, we got to see a new side to Teddy, Ben Barnes returned (with a tragic backstory), and I even liked the potential of Gustaf Skarsgard’s character. Season two’s ending had me excited for the future of Westworld and yet when season three was poised to come out, I couldn’t bring myself to watch it.

What Was Off About Season Three?

Perhaps it was the trailer we had gotten. I already knew I wasn’t feeling what they were teasing for the third season. In a way, I just think Westworld lost that unique spark that it had. There was something off about it. I know that in the third season we see Dolores and Thandiwe Newton’s Maeve in the real world, which at the end of season two, I thought was a cool concept. However, I realized that the thing I loved about Westworld was the feeling of the show being set in…the “west”. There was something so aesthetically beautiful to the set of Westworld that putting these characters in the real world (albeit a futuristic one) just felt off.

Even to this day, I just don’t have a desire to watch the third season. It was even Ed Harris who said in an article that season three was difficult to enjoy – especially for his character. I don’t know what happens in season three and I’ve never been the person to not watch something just because it garnered negative reviews. However, I think I trusted reviewers when their opinions on the third season declined as the show entered its second half. I wonder if this has ever happened to any of you. It honestly is disappointing when you’re so into a show and lose all interest. I know Westworld is coming back for a fourth season and honestly, I hope fans love it. Just, I won’t be watching it.
