Connections
When Star Trek: Picard premiered, I wrote an article about the connections between Star Trek TNG and the new show. After the 1st episode, the writers already started connecting the dots between the new series and TNG. Those connections were strengthened in the last few episodes. Characters such as Seven of Nine, and the former Borg named Hugh were reintroduced to the audience. But the big connective thread happened this past week with the return of Will and Deanna.
Number 1
For those few who haven’t watched it or unfamiliar with Star Trek TNG, Will Riker was Captain Picard’s first office. Picard refers to him as Number 1 (Just like his Dog in Picard). He was introduced in the first episode as was Will’s relationship with Deanna Troi. Deanna was the ship’s councilor. Through the years, their relationship evolved from lovers to friends and back to lovers as the films started. They were married during Star Trek Nemesis. This was the same film that saw the death of Commander Data.
Will’s relationship with Jean Luc Picard has always been a strong one. He still considers him the best Starfleet Captain ever. Although James T. Kirk would probably argue that point. Nonetheless, when circumstances lead to Picard seeking refuge, he sought out Will and Deanna.
Old Friends Reunite
Their reunion was heartwarming to see. Especially since the actors themselves are so closely tied to each other. In fact, Jonathan Frakes who plays Will, previously had directed an episode of Picard. He spoke last year at the Raleigh GalaxyCon how special it was to be with Ser Patrick Stewart once again. He also was concerned. Mainly because he had been concentrating on directing so much, he felt he needed to up his acting game for his scenes with Stewart. He needn’t have worried. The love these people have for each other shone on the small screen. It also was shown through the fact that both Deanna and Will were secure enough to tell Picard what they thought. Even if it was to tell him that he was wrong. Years of friendship allows for that.
So we have connections with Data, with Hugh, with Seven of Nine and now with the Rikers. What other connections will be revealed as the show progresses? Whatever they are, if they hit with the same impact as Will and Deanna, it will be must see TV. If it’s not already.
