Our Lady J Brought On to Write ‘Rub & Tug’ TV Series About Infamous Gangster Dante ‘Tex’ Gill

After the quick controversy surround Halle Berry’s initial announcement that she’d be playing a trans character and Scarlett Johansson’s past drama, it’s nice to see that a story of a trans-person will actually be played by a trans-person. Before I go any further, just know that both Berry and Johansson have dropped out of the previously announced projects. In fact, the project that Johansson did receive so much backlash for is being reworked into a television series.

Rub & Tug was initially meant to be a movie. Johansson was going to play a trans-man, set in 1970s Pittsburgh. After backlash, Johansson dropped out. And we didn’t hear much about the project. Until now!

Our Lady J will be the writer for Rub & Tug, the TV series. Which, will focus on the life of Dante ‘Tex’ Gill. Tex was a trans-man and one of the most infamous gangsters of his time. This was due to his ring of illicit massage parlors and anabolic steroids. Which, allegedly helped the Steelers with the Super Bowls back then. Rub & Tug will be written by a trans woman (Our Lady J) and is committed to finding a trans-man for the lead role.

Our Lady J stated:

“Tex’s life story is like no other, and the rich landscape of this unexplored moment in time has truly captured my imagination. I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to write a gangster drama based on such a fascinating and diverse web of queer characters.”

She continued:

“The show is about the promise of reinvention, and the peril of losing oneself in the process. Tex Gill was out and proud in an era – the late 1970s – when living authentically came with the price of social ostracization, leaving him vulnerable to a life of crime and lawlessness. Having grown up in Pennsylvania myself, I’m also excited to delve deep into Pittsburgh’s underbelly as it unspools the story of Tex’s remarkable life – it’s also the story of a city’s struggle for rebirth and a proud community’s efforts to make its voice heard.”

Our Lady J has worked on FX-series Pose and Amazon’s Transparent. There’s no casting news yet, but we will report when there is.
