On a thrilling night at Capital One Arena, Alex Ovechkin demonstrated that for him, integrity matters more than an easy milestone. The Washington Capitals captain came tantalizingly close to surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s legendary all-time goal record of 894 but turned down a golden opportunity to do so with an empty net.

During the third period of a tight contest against the Chicago Blackhawks, Ovechkin had already netted two goals, tying him with Gretzky. With the score at 4-3 in Washington’s favor, Chicago pulled their goaltender, leaving the net wide open. It was the perfect chance for Ovechkin to secure a hat trick and etch his name in history as the NHL’s greatest goal-scorer. Instead, he signaled to head coach Spencer Carbery that he’d rather stay on the bench.

Post-game, Ovechkin explained his choice, emphasizing that he wants his record-breaking moment to be earned against a defended net—not a hollow empty-netter. It’s a sentiment that resonates with fans and players alike, as the next goal he scores will be celebrated as a defining moment in hockey history.

While Ovechkin sat out that opportunity, rookie teammate Ryan Leonard seized the moment, scoring his first-ever NHL goal in just his third game. Shortly after, Chicago reinstated goaltender Spencer Knight, prompting Ovechkin’s return to the ice. He unleashed four shot attempts in the final minutes, coming agonizingly close to the record, but Knight stood tall—much to the dismay of the home crowd, who showered him with boos.

Though the hat trick eluded him, Ovechkin and the Capitals secured a 5-3 victory. With six games left in the regular season, his next chance to claim the record comes Sunday against the New York Islanders on the road. For a home-ice moment, he’ll need to hold off until Thursday’s matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Ovechkin’s pursuit of the record, which has stood for over 25 years, is about more than numbers—it’s about legacy. NHL legend Gretzky and commissioner Gary Bettman are watching closely, with Gretzky openly rooting for the Capitals star to make history his way, against a goalie standing in his path.
