At a recent Sony corporate strategy presentation, company leadership outlined in detail the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in video game development. Head of PlayStation Hideaki Nishino stated that AI would open the door to fundamentally new experiences for players, streamline production, and lower the barrier to entry for developers. The central message of the presentation centered on the principle of “automation without replacement,” where technology handles routine tasks while creative decisions remain in human hands.

PlayStation described in detail how AI is already embedded in current development processes. According to Nishino, algorithms are already automating repetitive tasks and accelerating quality assurance (QA), 3D modeling, and animation. The tools have been deployed at first-party studios, including Naughty Dog and San Diego Studio. The strategic goal extends beyond pipeline optimization: the company aims to improve content discovery mechanisms so that players can find projects of interest to them more quickly.

Artificial intelligence is already being actively used in video game development and the iGaming industry

Recent news about the use of AI in video game development — particularly in major AAA titles — has sparked active debate. This was especially evident in the context of reports about AI use in the development of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which received the Game of the Year award, as well as in the comments made on the subject by Daniel Vávra, creator of the Mafia and Kingdom Come Deliverance series. He stated that the use of AI is the objective future of the gaming industry, regardless of how players themselves feel about it.

It is also worth noting that these technologies are already being actively applied in the adjacent iGaming industry. This has been driven by an unprecedented surge in the popularity of gambling entertainment after online casinos began making extensive use of various bonuses and promotions to attract customers. Industry site statistics on deposit casino bonuses reviewed by our team showed that major iGaming brands attracted thousands of new players through these promotions over the past several years.

As the audience of these brands expanded primarily through casual players, the demand for new games increased. Players constantly need something new, and this significantly raises the workload on developers of such entertainment. These developers became industry pioneers who began actively incorporating generative AI into their products — and players have generally responded positively.

Video game developers are undoubtedly watching their counterparts’ experience with great interest. The conclusions drawn appear unambiguous: using AI makes it possible to speed up and reduce the cost of product development, enabling significant profit growth in a highly competitive environment.

From Broad Strategy to Specific Tools

CEO and President Hiroki Totoki set the framework by stating that AI would allow the company to pursue “more innovative and ambitious projects,” while insisting that “human creativity” must remain central to the approach. Hideaki Nishino elaborated, describing AI as a means to simultaneously enrich the gaming experience and make development more accessible.

In practice, the strategy unfolds across several directions:

    • Automation of routine processes. AI takes on repetitive operations and accelerates QA, 3D modeling, and animation pipelines. Sony’s internal teams are already working with these tools on a day-to-day basis.
    • Animation of visual elements. Nishino specifically highlighted hair animation, which was previously considered one of the most labor-intensive manual tasks. AI now handles a significant portion of this work, freeing animators to focus on more complex creative decisions.
    • Facial animation and performance capture. First-party studios, including Naughty Dog, use a tool called Mockingbird. It generates facial models based on performance capture data and optimizes the processing of live recordings. Sony emphasized separately that the technology does not replace actors or performers.

Sophy on the Track and PSSR in the Console

Beyond development tools, the company showcased examples of AI in finished products. Sophy, the AI racing agent for Gran Turismo 7, is already familiar to players: it can adapt to driving styles and create competitive virtual opponents. PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) applies machine learning to enhance image quality and increase frame rates on PlayStation 5 Pro, achieving visual improvements without a proportional rise in computational load.

Why the AI Conversation Remains Contentious

AI remains a subject surrounded by anxiety. The technology is associated with a wave of disinformation and outright low-quality “slop” content on social media, threats to jobs, enormous energy consumption, and environmental costs. Rising hardware and console prices are also partly attributed to the infrastructure demands of the AI industry.

Where the Technology Genuinely Reduces the Burden

That said, the tools Sony is describing are closer to an evolution of familiar automation. Much as graphics editors have simplified routine operations decade after decade, new algorithms relieve animators and testers of the monotonous parts of their work. This allows teams to focus on what genuinely requires human involvement.

AI as a Signal for Investors

Against a backdrop of rising costs, moderate market expansion, and higher console prices, the abbreviation “AI” is becoming a convenient marker for reassuring shareholders. Even if a substantial portion of the described solutions represents a logical evolution of long-established approaches, the mere mention of artificial intelligence adds investor appeal to any presentation.

Sony is already integrating AI into key stages of the production pipeline, from QA and 3D modeling to the processing of performance capture data. Specific tools and examples have been named: Mockingbird for facial models, Sophy as a game agent in Gran Turismo 7, and PSSR for graphics enhancement on PS5 Pro. Company leadership frames its expectations cautiously yet ambitiously: larger-scale projects while preserving the central role of human creativity.
