Point Blank Movie Review: Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo Deliver Action and Heart

Crossbones and Falcon work well with each other outside of the MCU. For those who don’t get that reference, Frank Grillo and Anthony Mackie played adversaries in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War. This time, though; they team up together in Netflix’s Point Blank. Quite well, I might add. The trailers for this film made it seem like a typical Netflix production, but this is probably one movie from the streaming service I ended up enjoying the most.

A Netflix Film That Stays on Course

From start to finish, Point Blank is non-stop action. Mackie plays Paul, a nurse and loving husband, whose wife is very close to giving birth. Things get complicated when he is forced to help Grillo’s Abe escape the hospital. Believed to have killed a high-ranking DA, Abe is on the top of the cop’s list of who they want most. Things get even more complicated when Paul’s wife is taken hostage, dirty cops are involved, and some big bads are gunning for their missing money.

While both Abe and his brother Matteo are meant to be seen as the bad guys, we quickly get the idea that things are not what they seem. For one, both brothers do factor in the fact that Paul’s wife Taryn is incredibly close to giving birth. While both are bringing this happy couple into a world neither want to be in, both seem concerned in making sure Taryn is safe. Which, I really did appreciate it – it was a nice touch.

Obviously, the relationship between Frank and Paul does not start out well. Things are tense. Paul is forced to do things he’s never done and never wanted to do. While this is the main duo in Point Blank, we should really give a nod to Taryn and Matteo’s moments together. Christian Cooke really added an emotional layer to Matteo and Taryn’s interactions with him give us insight into the person she is. We learn a lot from these small moments and all I kept thinking was, can we please stop putting the pregnant lady in danger!?

Conclusion

There were twists, turns, wall to wall action, and moments that really paid off. The movie had a touch of comical moments, but didn’t force them. Mackie’s concerned husband trope and Grillo’s tough-guy act worked well with each other. Real emotion was delivered and the movie came to a very satisfying end.

Small Negative

If I had to pick one thing that I wished was different it’s the music. I did want a better soundtrack to go along with the action scenes. Other than that, this was a surprisingly solid film. I don’t think it should be overlooked and hopefully, you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Point Blank stars Frank Grillo, Anthony Mackie, Teyonah Parris, Marcia Gay Harden, and Christian Cooke.
