Presenting a ComiXology Original: ‘40 Seconds’ by Jeremy Haun and Christopher Mitten

Time is a fleeting thing. Although it is often measured in days, hours or minutes, a lot can happen in a matter of seconds. Just ask the bull rider how important 8 seconds is in his competition. Sometimes it only takes a second or two to change your life. Imagine what 40 seconds could do. That’s all the time it takes to go from one dimension to another. At least that’s the premise in 40 Seconds, a ComiXology original comic series by writer Jeremy Haun and artist Christopher Mitten. It is available today.

Artwork

The first thing that is readily noticeable about 40 Seconds is the art. This book looks unlike anything I’ve seen before. And that’s always a good thing. Line work, color choices, even light sources all show creativity, originality, and  dare I say, a beauty in panels that needs to be seen to be appreciated. The color work by Brett Weldele is remarkable and shows that a subdued, almost pastel color pallet can be very effective.

Storyline

As for storyline, it is straight out of Science Fiction 101, and once again, as a traditionalist, that is a good thing. Writer Haun weaves a tale that pays homage to classic science fiction that will be recognizable to many generations. It goes like this:

A previous contact with an apparent alien race supplied us with a blueprint. A schematic to create a portal to another dimension and beyond. Just as one might expect, never one to let such an opportunity go to waste, the portal was created and a first group of explorers were sent through. Brave? Absolutely! Smart?? Unfortunately, a government gag order has been implemented that prevents me from stating anything other the positives. Needless to say, if at first you don’t succeed, send in the next group. So that’s where the story begins.

The Next Wave

After preparing for all possible contingencies, and after some considerable team training, the next group of explorers are on deck. Their mission? To go farther than the previous team, and perhaps locate and rescue them. At the least, try to find out what may have transpired.  But above anything else their goal is to reach the terminus.

So their journey begins. It takes 40 seconds to proceed through the first gate. Whether or not that 40 seconds seemed long or short would be determined by each explorer. But so far, so good.

But will their luck continue? Murphy’s Law would dictate that it won’t as does the natural flow of drama. To see, you should pick up this title. The creative team of writer Jeremy Haun, artist Christopher Mitten, Colorist Brett Weldele, and Letterer Thomas Maurer, have put together an impressive opening salvo for 40 seconds. Rest assured the tale will last much longer. Does 40 Seconds look like a story you could be interested in? If so, pick it up and let us know what you think here at GeekVibesNation.
