Producer for ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Gives Explanation As To Why Film Was Pushed Back

When Wonder Woman 1984 was in production, the idea of a November 2019 release was pretty exciting when combined with the release of Shazam! earlier that year. However, those hopes were dampened when it was announced that the release date was pushed back to June 5, 2020. The reasons for this were not made clear at the time but Gal Gadot posted on Twitter that the film was right where it should have been. Indeed, it was a mirror of the premier for the original Wonder Woman which was released in June of 2017. Collider recently interviewed producer Charles Roven and was asked why Wonder Woman 1984’s release date was moved. As it turns out, Summer 2020 is the date the filmmakers wanted all along:

We always wanted the date that we are on right now. The studio felt that until their slate for the year before came together—and they had an amazing end of 2018—that they needed to have a big what I call aircraft carrier, a “tentpole”, in [2019]…we had a very rushed post-production schedule in order to make the date that we were on, which was November 1, 2019. We were doing it because the studio said they really needed it, and then at a certain point they came to us and they said, ‘You know what, you guys are right. Let’s go back to the month that you guys released Wonder Woman 1 in, and take the extra time.”

Another thing that allowed Warner Bros. to easily shift their schedule was the success of their other films, including A Star is Born, Crazy Rich Asians, and of course, the mega hit that was Aquaman. With the momentum these films generated and with Shazam! looking like another hit, it allowed Warner Bros. the ability to give Patty Jenkins the time she needs to make Wonder Woman 1984 the film she wants.
