As Venom nears it’s premier, producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad, have already set their sights on their next Spider-Man-less spinoff in Morbius, also know as The Living VampireThe project is set to star academy award winning actor Jared Leto in the title role. Needless to say, with that kind of acting resume, the producers are expecting big things from their star.

Tolmach said he expects “awesomeness” from Leto. This will not be the first comic book role he has assumed as he famously took a method approach when preparing himself for the role of the Joker in Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad.

Just a similar level of intensity and charisma and devotion to the character. And loving the character,” added Arad, a longtime producer on Marvel-inspired projects, from Blade to the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy. Tolmach confirmed, saying Leto “loves the character.”

Created in 1971 by Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane, Michael Morbius was a “living vampire” and the sometimes-foe, sometimes-ally of Spider-Man. As laid out in Spider-Man #101, Morbius was a Noble Prize-winning biochemist, who tragically found himself afflicted with a debilitating blood disorder. In his attempts to cure himself, he used an experimental treatment that involved the use of vampire bats. Unfortunately, this left him irreversibly changed into a blood-lusting, vampire-like creature complete with white skin and vicious fangs…although he no longer had the disease.

At this time, it is being reported that Morbius will be a “horror action” film, centered around Leto’s scientist Michael Morbius. The film origin will follow the comic book one where his attempts to cure his rare blood disease inadvertently transforms him into a living vampire. (This will come as a relief to fans who prefer film-makers not take too many liberties with their favorite characters.) As he tries to deal with his now ever-present bloodlust, he tries to channel it by preying on those criminals he deems unworthy of life.

Daniel Espinosa directs Morbius from a script penned by Burk Sharpless (Power Rangers) and Matt Sazama (Lost in Space). Tolmach and Arad are the producers for the second project in “Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.”
