As horror, mystery, and classic monster mythology collide, Oni Press is preparing to unleash one of its most ambitious new series yet with PROMETHEUS GRAFT: THE SLAYINGS AT DEATH’S END. Coming in December from writer George Northy (Yuletide, EC’s Shiver SuspenStories) and Eisner Award-nominated artist Caitlin Yarsky, this chilling new four-issue tale reimagines one of literature’s most infamous creations in a way readers have never seen before.
Set within the shadowy halls of a remote Romanian castle, PROMETHEUS GRAFT: THE SLAYINGS AT DEATH’S END follows the undead spawn of Dr. Frankenstein, now reborn as the world’s most brilliant criminal investigator: Prometheus Graft. When a gruesome murder rocks the isolated fortress, he is called upon to unravel a mystery that reaches far beyond a single victim. What begins as a hunt for a killer soon spirals into a terrifying conspiracy with consequences that could threaten all of humanity. Blending gothic horror, detective fiction, and high-stakes suspense, Northy and Yarsky’s new series promises a monster-sized mystery that fans of both classic horror and modern comics won’t want to miss.
Writer George Northy
George Northy: I’ve always adored an Agatha Christie-style whodunnit and wanted to create a classic detective tale with a supernatural twist. But who to cast as the Hercule Poirot, Sherlock Holmes or Benoit Blanc of this monster mash-up mystery? Then it came to me: The Creature in Mary Shelley’s iconic FRANKENSTEIN was brilliant, tortured and a ‘living puzzle’ himself. What if he set out to try to solve the mystery of what he really is—and who exactly makes up his disparate, grafted-together pieces—and, along the way, discovered a talent for solving all manner of occult mysteries? That became our hero detective, Prometheus Graft. In his debut mystery, Graft is invited to Death’s End Castle to observe a peace treaty renewal between clans of vampyrs, witches and werewolves—but instead must solve a series of brutal slayings to avert all-out paranormal war.
Artist Caitlin Yarsky
Caitlin Yarsky: As someone who loves all things supernatural, PROMETHEUS GRAFT is an absolute playground for me. It’s been a joy creating a look-and-feel for the world with George, who gave me parameters but then let me run wild with whatever inspiration I came across. It’s a real partnership; we’ve worked hand-in-hand to bring readers a story with a unique blend of classic murder mystery, dark fantasy and gothic horror.
Oni Press’ PROMETHEUS GRAFT: THE SLAYINGS AT DEATH’S END #1 delivers a compelling blend of gothic horror, murder mystery, and classic monster fiction, introducing readers to one of this year’s most fascinating new protagonists. Northy reimagines the classic Frankenstein tale, turning the infamous creature’s child into a clever detective whose latest investigation might decide the fate of the human race.
Northy’s script masterfully blends atmosphere and intrigue, slowly revealing the eerie secrets tucked away in a remote Romanian castle while keeping readers hooked on the core mystery. The concept is refreshingly inventive, but it’s skillful execution that makes this debut issue shine. It delivers sharp character work alongside a lingering sense of dread that carries from one page to the next.
Caitlin Yarsky’s artwork is remarkable, conveying the eerie grandeur of Northy’s story through expressive character designs, particularly with Prometheus Graft, and intricately detailed environments. Each shadowy hallway and haunting landscape reflects the book’s gothic sensibilities, resulting in a visual experience that feels both timeless and unsettling.
With a memorable lead character, a gripping mystery, and a richly realized horror setting, PROMETHEUS GRAFT: THE SLAYINGS AT DEATH’S END #1 gets the new series off to a strong start. Fans of classic monster lore, supernatural detective stories, and atmospheric horror will find plenty to enjoy in this imaginative and ambitious debut. Oni Press’ Prometheus Graft: The Slayings at Death’s End hits shelves on December 9th.
