Plot Description: “An FBI profiler pursuing the world’s most wanted art thief becomes his reluctant partner in crime to catch an elusive crook who’s always one step ahead.”
I picture it like this…someone walked into a pitch meeting and threw all their favorite films onto a table. Indiana Jones, Die Hard 4, The Mummy, some other old 90’s kids films and a found footage reel from a Disneyland ride que. From that pitch the film, Red Notice, the new action comedy streaming now on Netflix, was created. Or at least that’s how I imagine it.
Red Notice is a caper, adventure, action, comedy. The film centers around Ryan Reynolds as Nolan Booth, a legendary art thief and The Rock as John Hartley, a cop whose main focus is capturing that legendary art thief. The two suddenly have to work together to track down a priceless artifact to clear Hartley’s name after he’s set up by a rival art thief, Gal Gadot, who’s called The Bishop.
The film has that Maltese Falcon, hunted artifact storyline that brings all of our favorite characters together. They all go on a wild adventure across Indiana Jones landscapes, that feels a bit Disney+ trying to make The Mummy in some senses. Yet I had a good time. It had more kids movie vibes than anything, but I chuckled. The twists and the turns came and friendship, adventure and all those other plots laid themselves out.
Overall the action was nothing I hadn’t seen, but still had me appreciating every stunt double that was hired. I can’t help but love Reynolds Deadpool dead pan banter. It’s hard not to give out a little laugh here and there. His chemistry with The Rock was good, it felt like his chemistry with Samuel Jackson in Hitman’s Bodyguard in some senses. Of course Gal Gadot fought in a ball gown, but she took her heels off so for that, Netflix, thank you.
Overall thoughts?
Red Notice was fun and silly. It was an adult National Treasure romp that had my attention. Was it in any way the best action film I’ve seen? No. But still was a great little Friday escape film. Reynolds is always funny and his new sidekicks added a lot to the plot. This is a great “order pizza and we’ll put on a film to eat breadsticks to” type of film.
