Review – Penny Dreadful City of Angels: Dead People Lie Down

The story continues with Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. Episode two brought in new players to the storyline and trucked the plot along. In episode one, Detective Tiago Vega was truly stuck between a rock and a hard place. As the first Mexican-American detective in LAPD history, Tiago is seemingly always forced to choose between his job and his family. The standoff in episode one concluded with Tiago shooting his brother, Raul, to save his partner, Lewis. Now, it seems that Tiago’s prayers to save Raul may have grave repercussions.

Spoilers

Natalie Dormer’s Magda continues to be an important figure in the series, as she plants her seeds of mistrust, hatred, and destruction. Not only does this show have supernatural forces, but Nazis, and an every-growing race-war. The police are hell-bent in finding anyone to blame for the murders of the four killed in some sort of cult ritual. When I say anyone, I mean he’s looking to find a Mexican individual to blame. Doesn’t even matter who really committed the murders. The police chief (played by Brent Spiner) and Councilman Charlton Townsend (played by Michael Gladis) just want to blame the Mexican community for the deaths of the civilians and four police. It doesn’t even matter how many in the Mexican community they killed.

There’s More to This Story

I liked two new aspects introduced in episode two. One was the aspect of Nazi-hunting, by Jewish men and woman – including Nathan Lane’s Detective Lewis. The other was Kerry Bishe’s introduction as Sister Molly. Admittedly, Bishe’s inclusion in this show is what drew me to it in the first place. Sister Molly, who is a radio evangelist; had a really nice moment with Tiago. I certainly hope she continues to be as sincere as she appeared to be this episode.

Rating: 3.5/5

As mentioned in the previous review, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels feels a bit like American Gods season one. Now I’m also feeling a bit of Amazon Prime’s Hunters mixed in. I enjoyed episode two a lot more than episode one. I’m interested in how all of the different players and storylines will come together. In the end, I believe all of it may not matter, as it’s Magda who is controlling the strings. No matter what, chaos will happen and that’s exactly what Magda wants.
