Season 7 of Rick and Morty is finally here in all of its glory, after the exit of Justin Roiland as the voice of Grandpa Rick and one of the showrunners due to felony domestic abuse charges. Many fans, including myself, were worried about who would voice the iconic Rick Sanchez. Thank god, the studio had a replacement for the character, and he does not disappoint! Season 7 of Rick and Morty is nothing but controlled chaos, much like the previous seasons. No matter how much I want to break down everything about these opening episodes, this review will be a non-spoiler. Before we get to season 7, let us talk briefly about what happened in season 6 of Rick and Morty.
Previously on Rick and Morty
Many things happened during the sixth season of Rick and Morty, but within all the craziness, there was a method to Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon’s madness.
There was an episode where Beth fell in love with her clone. “Bethic Twinstinct“ was one of Rick and Morty’s most disturbing episodes, which is saying something because all of the episodes are disturbing on some level. There is nothing better than psychologically scaring your kids than cheating on your husband with yourself.
We got an episode where we see Space Dinosaurs take over Earth to create a utopia, but Rick and Morty found out that there is an asteroid that destroys every planet these Space Dinosaurs interact with.
There had an episode where the entire family got a night person to learn new things; we even had a Die Hard-themed episode, which was terrific. Even though, on the surface, each episode felt random, there was always a story arc, which leads us to the continuation of the search for Prime Rick.
Season 7 Spoiler-Free Story
The premiere of season 7 does an excellent job with the relationships with Rick and his drinking buddies. The episode focuses on Rick, Mr Poopybutthole, Birdperson (Daniel James Harmon), Squanchy (voiced by the same guy that is doing Rick’s voice), Gearhead (Scott Chernoff), and a fantastic little cameo that everyone will love to see. Rick and his crew all get high and drunk, get into stupid moments, and end up fighting one of the most badass villains in cinema, but in these moments, everyone grows as friends, or so we think.
The second episode of the season focuses on Jerry (Chris Parnell) wanting to get his rake back from Gene (Tom Kenny). Jerry ends up going to Rick to help with his problem and makes fun of Rick for being a genius, but all of Rick’s smartness is wasted, and just like classic Rick, he gets annoyed because of it. Meanwhile, Morty sells crystals at crime town, leading to a hilarious reference to Liam Neeson’s Taken between Jerry and Rick. Out of the two episodes, this one is the best, and if it keeps going in this trajectory, this could be a very strong season for fans.
Overall, these first two episodes of Rick and Morty proved how much I missed this show, even though it has been a short time since the finale of Season 6. Rick and Morty hit all the boxes as one of the best comedy animated series ever. There is perfect comedic chemistry between Rick and Jerry in episode two, same with Rick and Mr. Poopybutt, Birdperson, Squanchy, and Gearhead. Their stories are engaging and give film fans much to admire with their cameos without being overbearing or restricting from our main characters, Rick and Morty.
Season 7 of Rick and Morty will premiere on October 15, 2023, on Adult Swim.
