RUMOR: Is Marvel Tossing James Gunn’s Script for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’?

Before I say anything further, I would like to state that this news is purely a rumor and that although rumors can be frustrating at times, it is still important to report on them. Now that I put that disclaimer up, let’s move right along. By now, you’ve probably heard about all the news surrounding James Gunn. Honestly, it’s giving me anxiety. First, Gunn was let go for inappropriate tweets he sent out a decade ago came back to the surface. The cast of Guardians of the Galaxy all band together to support Gunn and ask for his rehire for the third Guardians film. The most vocal has been Dave Bautista, who plays Drax the Destroyer. He’s gone as far as saying that if Gunn’s original script for the third film isn’t used, he’s walking.

It’s easy for people to get caught up in the culture of people being “canceled” or “bye Felicia”, but this would really be a sucky thing. This isn’t like Edward Norton being swapped out with Mark Ruffalo or Terrence Howard for Don Cheadle. Both actors were in one film before being recast. Bautista now has played Drax three times on the big screen and is an integral part of the Guardians vibe and what makes them work. To suddenly put another actor on screen would feel out of place and the chemistry wouldn’t be there.

Christopher Marc of Omega Underground has stated that there is a rumor that Disney has indeed tossed out Gunn’s original script. Gunn was originally working on a third volume script to his Guardians of the Galaxy series, confirming once upon a time that a trilogy would be it. This would be his final Guardians script and I’m unsure where else Gunn would have gone in the MCU if this controversy hadn’t taken over. If this rumor is true, the movie will be delayed and we’ll most likely lose Bautista. I can only hope that maybe he can stay around one more time for us fans.
