‘Scenes From a Marriage’ Episode Three: Mira Doesn’t Know What She Wants

An Observation of Scenes From a Marriage

I don’t want to vilify Mira or diminish her need for answers to her unhappiness in her marriage – though, ultimately I think that that unhappiness comes from herself. As I’m observing her, I see her as someone who never understood that long-term relationships aren’t going to be butterflies and rainbows forever. When she sees two people (her and Jonathan) becoming more so family and less so lovers, she believes that she needs something exciting to rejuvenate her. To her, this means a relationship. All relationships are super exciting when they begin, but now she’s realizing that a new relationship won’t give her the familiarity she craves from something she had with Jonathan.

Mira, You’re an Adult

The way she treats Jonathan is disheartening, but I believe her willingness to so easily distance herself from her daughter is more disheartening. Of course, a woman should be free to follow her dreams, but I feel Mira doesn’t think things through ever. She’s wanting to forget she has responsibilities and essentially wants her cake and wants to eat it too.

Now, I never understood why someone (in this case, Mira) leaves their spouse (Jonathan) for someone else, but then is hesitant for a divorce. In fact, Mira [in this episode] seemed taken back when Jonathan suggested they finalize a divorce. Is it that Mira wanted Jonathan as a fallback in case her relationship with Poli didn’t work out or does she simply enjoy the power play of being the one fresh-faced and moved on?

Rating: 3.5/5

Ultimately, as I continue watching Scenes From a Marriage, I find it more of a chore than anything else. Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac are phenomenal actors and are giving award-winning performances in this series. Still, I find watching their relationship – especially Mira – incredibly frustrating. I bring my insight as someone who has dated the same person for thirteen years (since I was eighteen) and so I know the ups and downs of a long-term relationship. I wish to go through the screen and ask Mira why she’s behaving like a teenager – at the same time, I want to understand her.

I suppose I’ll have to continue to see what mess these two get into next.
