A man in a scorched, futuristic suit with an X emblem winces in pain, standing before large flames and smoke in the background.

By now, you’ve probably seen the new teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday and seen that the X-Men are returning for the latest Avengers adventure. While we knew many of these actors were returning due to the cast reveal about a year ago, it still didn’t feel real. And there were leaks online, but seeing the official teaser? It just feels good.

Just like the previous two trailers, this latest one was just a small teaser to let us know who would be returning. Though, unlike the previous two trailers that showcased actors/characters who have already been in the MCU, this is the original X-Men actors. Yes, Deadpool & Wolverine technically took place within the MCU, but it really was its own thing with elements of both the MCU and the Fox universe that was almost entirely fan service (not that I’m complaining).

We can go on and on about how wonderful it was seeing Patrick Stewart return as Professor X (even though he did reprise the role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Ian McKellen as Magneto, it’s James Marsden returning as Scott Summers/Cyclops that is really exciting the internet. Just as the generation that grew up watching Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequel trilogy had to mature before the industry recognized how beloved he truly was, the generation raised on the X-Men trilogy has now come of age. And it’s time for Scott Summers to get his flowers.

A person kneels on the ground with beams of intense red energy shooting from their eyes, surrounded by fire and a smoky, red-lit background.

While Scott Summers made up the core cast of the original X-Men trilogy, the movies really tried to sway the audience into thinking that Scott was some goodie two-shoes and it was Wolverine who you rooted to be with Jean Grey. Cyclops’ powers were never showcased to their true potential and it frankly (looking back at it) feels disrespectful that they killed him off so early in X-Men: The Last Stand.

Now, we only saw a brief clip of Cyclops in the latest Doomsday trailer, but it feels like the powers showcased in the teaser were more comic-accurate than anything we saw in the Fox universe. Just seeing him rip off his shades and go full throttle was enough to earn my theater ticket. Sorry, Wolverine, Scott Summers is the right choice for boyfriend material. But, I guess it was the industry back then trying to sway us into liking the bad boys. At least we now see that Cyclops is no slouch.

Who else is excited for the X-Men’s return in Avengers: Doomsday?
