Shadow Moon and Technical Boy Team Up In ‘American Gods’ Season 3: Theory As To Why

The first episode of American Gods season three premieres on January 10, 2021. We have a few months to go but we can at least look forward to what’s going to happen in the third season. The American Gods Twitter page has been releasing teaser clips for each character. While every character’s upcoming storyline excites me, I am focused on one interesting teased aspect of the plot. Yesterday, the AG Twitter page released a teaser featuring Bruce Langley as Technical Boy. Watch below.

As happy as I am that Langley will be reprising his role as Tech Boy, it is interesting considering we saw Technical Boy “retired” by Mr. World in episode four of season two. Langley returned in the second season’s finale as Quantum Boy, who seemingly had an entirely different personality than Tech Boy. So, what happened to Quantum Boy and why the decision to bring back Technical Boy? Clearly, as Langley says; Tech Boy has a lot of making up to do. Perhaps due to the fact that Kayhun Kim is not returning as New Media the show felt it best to bring back Tech Boy? I’m not complaining – I love Tech Boy and wasn’t the biggest fan of New Media.

Shadow Moon and Tech Boy Team-Up

But, that is not what I want to talk about in this article. I’m more so interested in Ricky Whittle teasing a team-up between his character Shadow Moon and Technical Boy. In a tweet, Whittle teased:

Can’t wait for y’all to see shadow/techboy team up😱🤯, but why🤔?

Whittle’s tweet isn’t the first time season three advertising has teased a team-up. In a video that focused on Shadow Moon, there’s a brief scene where Shadow grabs Tech Boy by the collar of his shirt. You can see this at the 0:30 mark:

Recap: Spoilers From Seasons One and Two

Here’s a quick recap of Shadow Moon and Technical Boy’s relationship. In the very first episode of American Gods season one, Tech Boy literally tried to kill Shadow by lynching him. He briefly and disingenuously apologized to Shadow in ‘Lemon Scented You’ and the last interaction the two had was during the standoff between Mr. Wednesday and the New Gods at Easter’s celebration. Season two didn’t feature any Shadow/Tech scenes, so what’s happening here? In the book, Shadow and Tech Boy never team-up. Tech Boy is one of the many characters that didn’t have many scenes in the novel that get expanded upon in the show.

Theory Time

Okay, so, theory time. Technical Boy is a New God. But, he still has to feel pretty shitty over being virtually booted out of the group by newcomer New Media. In general, it’s very obvious he isn’t well-liked by Mr. World – this was apparent even in season one. Now, Tech Boy is back, but he isn’t in Mr. World’s good fortune. While Tech Boy is displayed younger and less refined than Mr. World and Media, Technical Boy is a very powerful god. The god of technology? As he said in season two, without him, “shit don’t spin”.

So, Tech Boy is feeling pretty shitty about the New Gods. Shadow Moon isn’t feeling very good Mr. Wednesday. Not only did Shadow just find out that Wednesday is his father, but also found out via Mad Sweeney that Laura’s death was orchestrated by Odin. Shadow’s departure to Lakeside is him stepping away from Wednesday and the whole war that has cost him everything.

With Shadow Moon essentially not having an affiliation and Technical Boy feeling distanced from the New Gods, this is going to cause them to team-up. There’s going to be an event that will be equally beneficial for them to team up. Something that happens where both, or at the very least Tech Boy; decide that they are no longer going to play by the rules of the orchestrators of this war. We obviously know Shadow will be fine, as he’s the protagonist of the show; but Tech Boy is on his last leg with Mr. World. If he decides to disconnect from World, this could be his last chance and we may very well see the last of him. Hopefully not.

I personally love that the show is going in a different direction than the book with many characters. Tech Boy, Bilquis, Ibis, and more had very little “screen time” in the novel. Yet, they’re some of the biggest and most prominent characters. While I wish we still had Mad Sweeney (another character expanded in the show) and Mr. Nancy, I’m still walking into season three with high hopes.

Why do you think Shadow Moon teams up with Tech Boy in season three? Let me know!
