[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”17566″ img_size=”900×500″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]When former Hulu exec Mike Hopkins was brought on to head Sony Television division, he knew he had some serious competition in the market. He also knew he had some ammunition in his arsenal with Sony’s Marvel relationships. They have a license with Marvel for a large library of characters in addition to their number one asset, Spider-Man. Their goal is to take advantage of this by not only using them on the big screen, i.e. the Academy Award winning Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse, and their successful Venom film, but on the TV Screen as well. Hopkins laid out a multi-year plan to push Spider-Man and their other Marvel assets to their advantage. Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Tony Vinciquerra explained it to Variety like this:
We have the next seven or eight years laid out as to what we’re going to do with that asset, [Spider-Man] and that will not only be on the film side — it’ll be on the TV side. Our television group will have its own set of characters from within that universe that we will seek to develop.
Sony has over 900 Spider-Man-adjacent characters, which they call Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters to draw from. With that many characters and possible storylines, Hopkins believes they have some exciting content for Marvel fans to look forward to.
Our team is pretty far down the road in terms of working through which characters we think could be their own star of a series. We’re developing a lot of Marvel-related content, and I think we’ll be out in the market very soon with something really, really big and transformational for us, because we’ve not done any shows with Marvel before, with Marvel IP. So that’s a big piece of development that we’re onto.
With Sony’s recent success on the big screen with the aforementioned Spiderverse and Venom, plus the currently in production Morbius, Sony has shown some ability to make a quality Marvel product. Given their Marvel connections, Sony television might soon offer some alternative content for which to challenge the likes of Disney+ and the DC Universe for viewers.
