Venom might just be the biggest enemy to face off against the Spideys…
It would be an understatement to say Playstation showcase was good this time around. As always, I go into these shows with absolutely no expectations, and yesterday I was caught with my jaw on the floor. I personally feel it was a fantastic showing of what’s in PlayStation’s pipeline for the near future. What was most surprising to me was how quickly Insomniac Games is working on not just one future title, but two future titles. One being Wolverine and the other being Spider-Man 2.
That’s what I want to talk about – Spider-Man 2 and what may actually happen and what it could mean for the franchise. In the video, we saw our favorite heroes, Miles Morales and Peter Parker (as both Spideys) battling random thugs on the streets of New York City, all while a strangely familiar voice was narrating. If you’re a fan of Spider-Man you’ve most likely guessed it was Kraven The Hunter due to him feeling thrilled about finally finding a challenging opponent…or in this case two!
If you’ve read any of the comics you’ll know that Kraven is a pain in Peter’s ass, but more importantly, he’s not an enemy to be taken lightly. Since Insomniac’s Spider-Man universe is something separate from the comics (although it was later counted as canon when all the different spideys met) things can go differently than how they did in the comics – both Earth-616 and Ultimate universe, also known as Earth-1610. As we’ve already seen from Spiderman 2018 and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, things are drastically different. Aunt May and Jefferson Davis both die in this universe and that hasn’t always been the case in the comics. In the Ultimate universe, Peter dies and Miles takes up the mantle in what seems like it’s out of guilt because he had gotten his powers while Peter was alive, but didn’t help because he was afraid of what could happen.
What’s interesting is at the end they showed Venom. Venom is a symbiote that has latched on to many characters in the Spider-Man world, most notably Eddie Brock. Of course, over time the hosts change ranging from Eddie to Mac Gargan (The Scorpion) to Flash Thompson. The ending of the trailer would make you think Kraven is actually Venom because Kraven’s voice slowly transitions into Venom’s voice. In the comics, Kraven has donned the Black Spider-Man suit but it wasn’t the symbiote.
WHAT IF…
Harry Obsborn was given the symbiote suit to expedite his recovery and get back to normal? It’s not too far-fetched since that has happened in the comics. The games haven’t strayed too far from the source material since Miles’ uncle is The Prowler and sort of becomes a mentor to him. At the end of Spidey 2018 it could’ve been taken as Harry becoming The Green Goblin, or it could’ve been Norman – we don’t really know. What if this is the game where Peter actually dies and everything falls on Miles to carry on the legacy? What if the symbiote finds its way to Peter, and then he becomes a temporary villain? Insomniac has so many ways to tell the next story that would make this one of the most fantastical and dramatic yet action-packed stories we’ve ever seen.
