International markets have contributed more than $1.23 billion to the current total, with Brand New Day becoming Sony Pictures’ biggest release ever in dozens of territories.

China has been particularly important, with the film crossing $200 million there during its third weekend. That is notable at a time when Hollywood blockbusters can no longer automatically expect the enormous Chinese grosses they enjoyed during the 2010s.

Strong performances across Europe, Latin America, Asia and Australia have ensured that the movie’s success is not being driven by one or two unusually strong markets. Spider-Man remains one of the few superhero characters whose appeal travels almost everywhere.

Crossing $2 billion puts Brand New Day into territory occupied by some of the biggest theatrical phenomena ever released.

There are still limits to how far it can go. Avatar and Avengers: Endgame remain extraordinary benchmarks, and both benefited from long theatrical runs and subsequent rereleases that increased their totals over time.

Spider-Man does not need to catch either of them for this run to qualify as historic.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Keeps Getting Bigger

Perhaps the strangest part of this box office trajectory is that Holland’s Spider-Man movies have continued getting progressively larger even as the wider superhero genre has experienced much more inconsistent results.

Spider-Man: Homecoming introduced his solo version after Captain America: Civil War. Far From Home became the first Spider-Man film to pass $1 billion. No Way Home nearly reached $2 billion.

Now Brand New Day has finally crossed that line.
